  35. Fresh New Tracks Says:

This week, I thought I would share my thoughts on an artist that is as talented as he is paradoxical. With Teflon Don dropping July 6th, Rick Ross is currently one of the most anticipated artists in the game. He’s also one of the most controversial figures because of his prior association with law enforcement. In 2001 when “Hustlin” dropped, it climbed up the charts and became a street anthem that could get the most hardened of “D-Boys” nodding their heads. Ross’s popularity, however, was largely rooted in facade. A self constructed image that gave the impression that he was perhaps biggest drug trafficker in Miami. In reality, Rick Ross’s name was borrowed from “Freeway Rick Ross”, one of LA’s most notorious drug dealers of all time.

After a picture of Rick Ross in a police uniform surfaced, he lost major credibility amongst hip-hop fans and found himself in a messy showdown with one of hip-hop’s biggest heavyweights, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson. Ross was publicly humiliated by 50′s camp and the facts of Mr. Roberts’s life began to get in the way of his career. Surprisingly, despite his loss of credibility “Deeper Than Rap” sold 158,000 copies in its first week and debuted number 1 for the second time in a row. It received critical acclaim and is regarded as a classic album amongst many hip-hop connoisseurs. What are we to make of this apparent Ross paradox?

Impenetrability of image, that old signal of hip-hop authenticity, somehow no longer seems to count. Like all great pop music, rap is now theater, and Rick Ross seems to simply be playing a character. Though his life beyond rap has been used against him, Ross still teases about an unknowable dark side that leaves questions unanswered and his believability open to interpretation.

When asked of his employment on the side of the law, Ross said, “The truth is more sinister than the obvious,” suggesting an undisclosed layer to his time there. Whether you believe him or not, you just can’t deny the music. If albums were all that mattered, Rick Ross would be on top of the game. However, in today’s hip-hop world though, we’ve learned that it is much “Deeper Than Rap”. Come July 6th, my bets are on Ross to deliver a body of work that was better than his last. You can just call it, “National Bawse Day”.

And yeah, I wrote this w/ the help of Nah Right.

  38. 40 Inc Says:

Freeway Ricky Ross Vows To Take Back Control of ‘Rick Ross’ Name

Since being released from federal prison last year, former Los Angeles drug kingpin Freeway Ricky D. Ross has been preparing a battle plan to “go to war” for the rights to his name, specifically calling out rapper Rick Ross and parties involved in his career.

In a press release issued to us on Monday (May 24), Ross’ camp accused rapper Rick Ross, Def Jam and Universal of profiting “off of his name unlawfully while he was in jail, without his consent.”

“It’s no secret that the boss at FreewayEnterprise.com is unhappy with how his name has been exploited and misused since he went to prison in 1995, and in 2006, the above-named parties signed [William L. Roberts II] (Rick Ross’ government name) to a big record deal and then spent, and made, millions off Ross’ name,” Freeway Ricky’s camp says in a press release.

Freeway Ricky claims that he had previously “protested the exploitation and misuse of his name from prison” in 2006, by having a lawyer send letters to Def Jam to cease use, but was ignored. Now that’s he out of prison, he plans to stand up for his rights, by fighting for the “control of his name in commerce by any means necessary.”

It’s unclear, however, if Ross plans to file a lawsuit against the rapper and his record labels, or if his comments are strictly for plans to run a campaign protesting the use of the name.

In the meantime, Freeway Rick Ross is planning a movie about his life with writer/producer Nick Cassavettes, which is slated to drop next year. He is also seeking a deal to release a book about his life as well.

Freeway Ricky Ross was released from prison in May 2009, after serving 20 years for operating a $2 million per day multi-state drug empire. Although he was originally sentenced to life in prison after he was busted trying to purcahse over 100 kilos of cocaine from undercover agents, his sentence was reduced through appeals, after a series of explosive articles by the late Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Gary Webb uncovered C.I.A.’s role in importing cocaine into black communities to fund Sandinistas in El Salvador, as part of the Iran-Contra scandal.

Rapper Rick Ross emerged on the scene in 2006 with his hit single, “Hustlin’,” where he bragged about tales of slinging massive amounts of cocaine through Miami. When he broke onto the scene, controversy surfaced over his rap moniker, which many believed he stole from Freeway Ricky Ross.

Personally, I find he’s fuckin’ all these hot beats up. Wack droning hooks, elementary rhymes about the same ol’ shit never said in a new or fresh creative way, too many features and a once barritone voice that has since morphed into something sounding like Kermit the Frog on steroids.

I ain’t anticipating the album at all, but i’m sure a couple hundred thousand will pick it up, just like his other average albums. Thank god for those features and hot producers of the moment! *wink fuckin wink*
