Naw Doc’s the Name was an excellent LP, and the first Blackout has aged well. You gotta attribute at least part of Red’s “falling off” to his chasing after that Hollywood money, which fucks up a lotta of rappers catalogs (Cube, Common, Luda, etc)

I love Redman (n/h)…his persona/rhyme style hasn’t changed a bit since the early 90s, and he’s still dope…i think the big difference between his early work, and what he’s been putting out lately, is that he’s on the wrong side of 40, these days- getting older is a crime in hip hop, unless you’re Jay-Z, and he doesn’t have the same hunger, intensity (none) and urgency in his music (none), as he did back on Whut Thee Album, Dare iz a Darkside, and Muddy Waters…kinda like, when I first got in corporate America, I’d run errands, fill in for the receptionist (no “the Office”) while she took her lunchbreak, work late and weekends, and all that…these days, I’m mad if if I gotta come in an hour early, lol..

In major markets. Shit’s kind of unprecedented.
April 27th, 2010 at 1:53 pm
Semi LF: has anybody noticed that rappers pretty much copy whoever did something successfully first, but don’t do it as well, and then run it into the ground?
Exhibit A: when rappers started following the “club song, girl song, thug song, money song, mama I’m sorry song” format for singles and albums
Exhibit B: after Nas and Jay, it seemed like every rapper was looking to have a public beef to boost record sales. I look at Jay vs. Nas as
something that gave us Ether, Takeover, and a reenergized Nasir. Somehow, we went from that to grown men beefing on Twitter.
Exhibit C: when Run DMC and Aerosmith got together for Walk This Way, it was something different at the time. And there have been a lot of great rock rap fusions. But now, Jay is trying to get with every middle aged rocker he can, regardless.
Exhibit D: when Wayne flooded the market with quality mixtapes, it was great. Then he went platinum in a week and a half, and rappers start flooding the market with music of varying quality, sometimes extremely low quality control. Some even put out a mixtape a day, or an 87 track mixtape. I’m appreciative of good free music, and I support artists financially who deserve it (shout out to Pac Div). But I’d rather pay for a dozen great tracks than get 50 mediocre ones for free.

Exhibit E: when T-Pain came out with “I’m Sprung,” it went. Then he started writing songs and doing hooks. Cool. But then everybody jumped on autotune, and it hurt the music after a while. I’ll say this, though: I developed a lot more respect for T-Pain after hearing other people in autotune, because it helped me to realize that what he does requires actual talent, and that it’s more than the computer.

never said he “chased”. just saying that after Muddy waters his a good portion of his music began sounding “forced”. you have to think, when Doc’s the Name dropped Defjam was on top of the world. and if you, as a defjam artist, couldn’t compete with DMX, JaRule, Jay-Z record sales, then you could just forget about it. Redman got ate by the machine.

Big Daddy Kane always gets slept on, when niggas discuss dope mc’s, too…maybe it’s the crushed velvet pajamas and suspect background dancers, but I’m saying…that ninja was a beast….

As far as Corey Gunz, last I heard he finalizing something with Young Money, but I dont see that panning out well.
^^^
he’d be the most lyrical in the crew unless he goes the jae milz route. Currency had the right idea by leaving that label because right about now he would be gettin no shine and prolly have a different sound under the YM banner

What was Jay talking about on “Beach Chair”?
^^^
Jay’s just talking about his future, as a man, his thoughts on life (just his thoughts).. I think that song was a debate about whether or not to give up rappin’ altogether or to recommit to rappin’ forever.. Let’s face it, Jay’s the first rapper that has “Time Life Special” potential, or “PBS Pledge Drive” potential.
I’m sure he was pondering that stuff during Kingdom Come’s sessions (pause that just in case) and it came out. But the beat was dope, the lyrics were insightful and intelligent and not corny (i’m looking at you “mama i made it” and “30′s the new 20″ and the forced “lost ones”), and even tho’ I couldn’t understand Coldplay dude’s chorus, it was sonically enjoyable.

Collision Course was enjoyable if you like Jay-Z and you like Linkin Park. If you don’t like either, or if you like either too much (nh), you won’t enjoy it.
Also, I’ll go to my grave defending “Beach Chair”.
^
by your logic, I should’ve liked Beach Chair then. Sometimes, people are just meant to be friends. You don’t have to collaborate with everyone you respect as a person who also happens to perform in a different genre from you. Sade understands this.

Beezy.. with your seemingly unconditional love for extremely excessive weed smoking and bitch chasing, I find it actually hard to believe you dont fuck with Wiz..
^^
Beezy’s musical tastes are mad random, arbitrary, and inconsistent. You can never guess.

So I was just about to listen to Kush & OJ
now not sure

I’m still anticipating that Rae/Sade collab though.

I might hate that ad-lib/gimmick/catch phrase more than I’ve hated any in history. He says it in every fucking song. He can’t think it’s creative anymore.
While we’re at it, I’m convinced either “G-G-G-G-G Unit!” or a Puffy adlib are the best ever.
April 27th, 2010 at 2:14 pm
i think niggas are creative today its jus not in ways most ppl prefer because they end up soundind outrageous and on some weird shit. I.e lil wayne and his whole alien auto tune phase.

Kush n OJ >>>>>>>>> There Is No Comp 2
*straight face*
but still Fab >>>>> Wiz
April 27th, 2010 at 2:14 pm
Fab intentionally dumbed his shit waaaay down. he’s took Jada’s advice and went southpaw in order to maintain relevancy in today’s climate. it’s a shame, but this is what NY rappers are forced to do in order to tap into the bamma movement that’s dominated over the past couple of years. he mentioned a couple of years ago in an interview that his dumming down is intentional (i.e. much slower delivery, drawing out words, simple rhyme patterns, slower southern beats, etc. .. ). it’s all calculated on his part.
April 27th, 2010 at 2:15 pm
worst ad-lib ever- Big Boi’s “Boyyyy stop!!” (none)

that shit was funny and everyone was repeating it. imagined if he did that again lol
April 27th, 2010 at 2:15 pm
sometimes weed and bitch music needs to be THAT GOOD to bother with it, so many people do such chill themes, i look for some lyrical prowess, and flow is obv a necessity. i can live without metaphors dominating a song, is he big on metaphors and shit like that. i like clipse tho, hows that for contradictory.

“Take That” is indeed, the greatest adlib ever. As long as you block his gay club adventures out of your mind.
