Drake on “So Far Gone” vs. Thank Me Later
Yesterday, after we posted the bit about Drake not being the typical street dude in rap music today, it spawned a whole debate in the comments about whether street cred has anything to do with good music, and Rick Ross thus became another example of such an argument. Either way, in this other interview excerpt, Drake talks about putting out a mixtape like So Far Gone, which he was singing on, and thinking he had made the biggest mistake of his life.
Yeah, ’cause I started the mixtape off with an R&B song about women that were lost in the world. It was a risk. I mean, we knew it meant something to us, but we also sat there, like, “Man, are people going to accept this? A rapper that’s singing?” And I’m not just doing melodies, I’m singing. Same with this album—I’m singing. And I even went further. I explored music on So Far Gone. I was taking other people’s music and revamping it. I can’t do that on an album. I love that genre of music. It sparks something in me when I use soundscapes or write like that. So now I’ve crafted my own interpretations on that that apply to my life, and I’m just wondering, Are those going to work now? ’Cause it’s just me. It’s my shit. So it’s a lot of unknowns on this album.

You know, I never quite understood the math on selling 100K out of your trunk. You would need to sell roughly 4000+ a month to do that. That means you and a crew of 5 would need to sell 800 a month or 27 copies a day. (That’d be two years, though for what it’s worth)

Think about it. Drake put out a few mixtapes prior to SFG just rapping and had mediocre success. He went for something completely unconventional and outside the box with SFG, and it was a wild success. I feel like SFG has gassed him up to a point where he feels that he can try mostly anything and be wildly successful.
What if he goes too far? On his debut album no less…
Has he really done enough yet to start getting super outside-of-the-box creative as an artist?
