At Peter Rosenberg’s Noisemakers last night, Pete Rock finally admitted that he’s working with Kanye on Good Ass Job, after denying it last month by saying he was in Hawaii for “just a vacation.”
[22:15] [Rosenberg: First of all shout out to Kanye for making hip-hop so big that when you hear somebody's traveling to Hawaii, you're like "oh my god." So what's up with this Kanye thing?] Yeah I’m working with him. That’s it, that’s all I could say. [Rosenberg: You went out there to Hawaii?] Yeah, I went out there… He feels like a little brother to me, like my little brother that’s doing it. We got along just fine. He’s definitely hip-hop… [24:10] He takes it to another level. We had these musicians and we did this song. They played around my little raggedy beat and made it real big. [Rosenberg: Did you hear him rhyme?] [Exhales] Yup. I love the way he works. He goes from one room writing rhymes, and then goes to the another room fixing a beat, and then he goes in another room to do something else.
He then talks about wanting to work with Eminem & Jay-Z.
[25:40] [Rosenberg: There's an Eminem record dropping this year too, have you ever had any contact with Em?] I would love to. I never [met him.] He’s a producer too. [Rosenberg: I feel like he could still benefit from Pete Rock. I love Renegade and all, but I feel like he could still..] I love Eminem, I think he’s one of the dopest. Ever. I started questioning Jay-Z when he got at him on that joint. I take nothing away from Jay, I just thought Em’s verse was incredible. [Rosenberg: Why has there not been a Jay record? I talked to him, I know you're one of his favorites and yet there's never been anything. Was there ever going to be anything?] We never worked together, I always wanted to. Actually I gave him a beat that I did for Kurupt, “Yessir”. I was hoping that he used it.

J. Cole is a guy who can rap about things regular people care about and in a moving way like Kanye, it’s just he may actually need to slow his flow down, and use less complex rhyme schemes if he wants mass appeal. Kanye does that.
Jay and Em don’t have to because their voices, accents and delivery are such that they can rap fast with great rhymes and still be clear to casual fans. J. Cole, and another guy who sometimes has this problem, Nas, are stuck getting respect from heads for the most part.
That last point you made about artists using disdain for fame to protect their images from failure was great.

He’d be dumbing down as far as his rhyme complexity and flow goes, but otherwise it’d be the same. If he got big, it might even be worth it just to have another famous rapper who tackles the same subject matter and writes so well.

He doesn’t have to be as big as Kanye, just big enough to enter some larger scale of public consciousness. I’d like for him to be as big as Rick Ross or Jeezy, given what I think is his popular appeal, if all went well…
And the problem with blog rappers is that this guy really needs to get some level of fame quick. When your fame is mainly on the internet, and your debut doesn’t do as well as expected, you lose that online coverage that you still need given your failure to get big elsewhere.
The internet is on to the next one so quick if he doesn’t get big. As far as fickle music scenes go, it’s between British Indie and blog-rap for the worst offender. Sites will give up on you quick.
But he can keep putting out good music whether he’s big or not, and if that was your main point then I agree completely. I just think it’d be nice for a guy like him to make it.

A Kanye cosign could be just as important as any style changes too, as far as a conscious rapper goes, you don’t get a better co-signature than Mr. West’s. Maybe Kanye could help at Jay’s behest.

Yup.
Both of these guys seem to only make great albums, and with both you can expect a major stylistic change on each album, but with Kanye you kind of know for sure he’s up to date and still in touch with the music scene. Hell, he’s at the forefront as far as hip hop goes. Dre’s beats in the past few years haven’t given anyone reason to think the same of him.

Oh and i think too much anticipation has been built for Detox…a few years ago I think this Under Pressure track would do better wit the masses then it will today.
