Another thing, too, is that you have to take into account what an album means for your life at the time it comes out. It makes a difference in how you view it.

Yep. LR is dope. We Major is one of my favorite songs ever. Still though, I don’t see it stacking up to Life After Death. Kick in the Door + Ten Crack Commandments > Kanye’s life.

I thought CD was his best for about 2 years, but I relate to more of the content in LR now so my opinion changed.
April 8th, 2010 at 3:19 pm
Also I should say that I didn’t grow up in the bigge tupac era, so i still don’t see them as the end all be all of rap like a lot of heads.
April 8th, 2010 at 3:22 pm
At the time LAD came out, I was a kid…I had never shot anyone or at anyone when it dropped, and I to this day never sold drugs.
But when LR came out, I had a job I hated…that last verse on Gone helped me get through. Both my grandmothers had passed…Roses was helpful. I had become more interested in what was going on in the developing world and what I could do to help…Diamonds. I took a big leap of faith, too–I left a high paying gig in corprate America to write a book…Jay’s verse about needing to get off the boat to walk on water spoke to me.
April 8th, 2010 at 3:25 pm
I was going through some things spiritually too…Touch the Sky. And that song introduced the world to a kid named Lupe Fiasco. In time, TTS may be this generation’s Live at the BBQ, which introduced us to a 19-year old named Nasir Jones.

Yeah I grew up by the beach in FL so i wasn’t exposed to that unless I went downtown, and even then I was just at school. So although Biggie’s flow and charisma is undeniable, the shit he’s talkin about usually doesn’t impress me.

From Biggie’s Wikipedia – “On October 29, 1996, Faith Evans gave birth to Wallace’s first son, Christopher “CJ” Wallace, Jr.[15] The following month Junior M.A.F.I.A. member Lil’ Kim released her debut album, Hard Core, under Wallace’s direction while the two were involved in an apparent love affair. She was also pregnant with Wallace’s child but decided to have an abortion.[2]“

Hl, I see what you’re saying, but Cannibal Ox’s The Cold Vein is classic and most people haven’t even heard it. Main Source’s Breaking Atoms doesn’t really have that song that everybody will go crazy over, a la Hypnotize.
And Kick Push really is a crazy song: a story rap, excellent beat, excellent delivery. Filipino jazz samples FTW. Daydream is great, Hurt Me Soul, American Terrorist, Pressure…
He Say She Say is dope off the strength of doing the same verse twice but changing a pronoun and adding a different layer of meaning.

The Cool was a disappointment when it came out and I started enjoying some of the tracks later and Shining Down and I’m Beaming off Lasers aren’t great but just good. The dude can definitely rap better than a lot of rappers but dude still has to prove with another album that he is one of the best. He has a lot of potential to be great especially as a lyricist but dude just continues to try that futuristic shit and it’s good but you always think he’s gonna rap like Lu before The Cool and raps like Lu after The Cool.
Nassir had more than one classic album (fuck Camel 2001) and Lu has only one in the less than years he’s been in the game so comparing the two is ridiculous.

Breaking Atoms has several classics. Live at the BBQ, Looking at the Front Door, Friendly Game of Baseball etc. Cold Vein is dope. Mabey an underground classic like Monkey Barz, but you can’t compare that to OBFLC, LAD, Illmatic, etc. Its a whole other level. Those records don’t compare.
