XXL’s Freshmen ’10 Live concert went down last night (March 31) at New York City’s Highline Ballroom.
The show, hosted by DJ Envy of Power 105.1 and sponsored by MTV2 & Corona, was packed from wall to wall with fans waiting to see their favorite freshmen and the headliner for the evening, Cam’ron.
Veteran Doug E. Fresh made a surprise appearance during the show before headliner Cam’ron hopped onstage. The Harlemite arrived around 1 a.m. with an entourage of about 40 members all supporting Killa’s latest protege Vado. The young rapper went through his standout cuts, like his Big L tribute “Large on the Streets,” “Stop it 5″ and “Ric Flair,” before Killa jumped into “something a little more familiar.” Cam had the crowd in a frenzy as he rocked out to “Down and Out,” “Leave Me Alone,” “Wet Wipes” and “Get it in Ohio.”

The night started off with a set by Jay Rock. The gruff voiced MC brought along up-and-coming Compton rapper, Kendrick Lamar, to play hype man, as he performed a handful of of his mixtape staples, including the hit single “All My Life.”
Freddie Gibbs followed, starting off his set list with “Womb to the Tomb,” his collaboration with fellow classmate Pill.
The Gary, Indiana rep later brought out Jay Rock to premiere their duet off his upcoming Str8 Killa No Filla mixtape, “Rep to the Fullest.”

When Nipsey Hussle arrived, his entourage clashed with Rock’s flamed up crew backstage but it was all love. Both crews celebrated unity by shaking hands with one another in the midst of throwing up their hoods. L.A. transplant Gibbs and Neighborhood Nip even took shots of Hennessy with Jay Rock in honor of his birthday.

Next up was Kanye West protege Big Sean, who performed his popular song, “Getcha Some” and a new track called “Fuck You Doin’ (Bullshit),” as well as his “Supa Dupa Lemonade” freestyle.

Donnis wowed the audience with a slew of surprises. Not only did he have a violinist accompanying him, the newly-signed Atlantic rapper boasted cameos from Estelle and Ryan Leslie, who played the keyboards during the Atlanta Brave’s rendition of “Gone.”

He hasn’t gotten that much attention since he’s been released.
===========================================
Yeah he has.
And what does Billboard have to do with the quality of the music?
Paper Trail = T.I.’s Graduation
T.I. Vs. T.I.P. may have been disjointed as an album but…
Hurt, Tell Em I Said That, Respect This Hustle, Watch What You Say To Me…this is the T.I.P. I wanna hear.

You said what has he done so those accolades don’t qualify as doing something? And Graduation is my favorite Ye LP so what you saying? lol..Paper Trail was the truth. Niggas don’t like artist to evolve, they just want them to make the music they like their whole career and stay stagnant.

Sometimes, I feel like Nah is like the guardians of the art form, the last bastion that is here to prevent hip hop from falling into the abyss. Some people on here got wack taste, some are great, and some are different, but everybody adds something, even if it’s just blatant stannery.
Quiet as kept, soon as my little song had two hundred downloads I felt like I had gone hood platinum on the strength of Nah. Haven’t really told too many people from my actual life that I even did the song.

True, but this shit started a thread back like niggas was apologizing for liking dude.Trying to convince niggas he was legit. At this point if you don’t have a favorite T.I. song you lost.

this is true, D_Block. And I’m guilty of it, too: I want Mos to give me another Black on Both Sides. I don’t think he will, though, and I don’t think any other solo effort of his has been on the same level.

Yeah, but I personally liked Urban Legend, King, and Paper Trail as well. Truthfully, Tip only made one wack album, but even on that one I give him credit for trying to do something conceptual. If it don’t work, it don’t work, and you can always try something else. He found that balance on Paper Trail.
April 1st, 2010 at 9:27 pm
Paper Trail was Tip’s most mainstream album to date.
I could do with more of the real talk and less of the radio ready Pop formula he used on there.
And yes, Tip is nice, one of the illest out of the South…ever.

But dude had opportunities and label fuckery always stalled his career,
It was tougher to get a deal back then. You needed to actually be a dope rapper.
Nowadays you just need a little internet buzz and you’re on the cover of XXL.

April 1st, 2010 at 9:30 pm
only thing I was at all mad at, other than the vs. album, was that T.I. used King as the ATL soundtrack…the actual ATL soundtrack was fire, so I felt it was a shame that it never came out.
D_Block, any chance you have the resources to make a proper ATL soundtrack, since you’ve sort of become our DJ Drama/Mixtape king, but minus the annoying yelling and rewinding of verses just as I’m getting into the song.

I hope all these XXL Freshmen dudes enjoyed last night…cause a year from now they’re gonna look back and realize that’s as good as they are ever gonna have it…it’s sad in a way how they’re somewhat hapless victims of empty blog buzz…because they were somewhat arbitrarily chosen by a handful of blog tastemakers that they had “next”, they get put on that cover and expectations they have no realistic chance of ever meeting placed on their shoulders….say what you want about Millz, but the guy had a point…empty blog buzz is the hip hop equivalent to the increasingly worthless U.S. dollar…artificial value with nothing of real worth to stand behind it…these guys got all this “blog buzz” with not even a semblance of actual tangible fanbases in the real world…like really, what does the future hold for a guy like Pill once his album drops and sells 27K copies the first week? Then what? He laughs at Millz for being in the game for 10 years with no album, but the guy at least has his share of a gold album and two singles that have sold upward of 4 millions copies that’ll produce publishing and royalties for the rest of his life…Pill has no Wayne to fall back on…he’ll be a less successful Ace Hood…the game is rough now a days
