With all that said, I’ve always had a hard time listening to Busta Rhyme’s albums from start to finish in one sitting. It’s just…too much (ll).

Hip hop is on some destroy and rebuild stuff right now. Like, yeah, Drake is now major, but if you think about it, his whole thing is improbable. Like imagine if Carlton Banks or Screech from Saved By the Bell had blown up as a rapper, and not a bubble gum package rapper, but as someone who actually can get respect from hip hop heads except for Rey. And then to do it not by leveraging your fame to go with a major right away, but to release three progressively better mixtapes, one of which is now sold at retail now. I saw photos of SFG being mixed AT THE CRIB. And that’s how new rappers will really get success, being creative on their own. This is just the beginning of a movement. I’ve been thinking something similar. Drake’s ascent really showed the futility of utilizing the major label system. There’s definitely been a fundamental shift that we won’t see the real affects of for a few years.

I’m going to test it. I’m going right to releasing sn album, and why not? I’m not sampling any songs for our beats. I did the math, and I really don’t have to sell that many copies for it to be worthwhile financially, and, even if you count my computer and the equipment I’ve bought over the years, I don’t have to sell a whole lot to even break even.

Yo, independence is great for some, but you have to be a stupendous talent (Drake) to do it. Look at Jason Derulo: No one knew who he was this time last year, but because he has a label (and J.R. Rotem), he gets a killer sample and a well-produced album, and has a #1 hit and a #8 single as a result.

Girlicious Star Charged with Felony in Coke Bust
Natalie Mejia from the Pussycat Dolls reality show “Girlicious” has just been charged with one felony count of drug possession after cops say she was traveling with a Gucci purse full of cocaine.
Mejia was arrested in Glendale, CA yesterday for allegedly having more than a dozen bags of the white stuff in her purse. The 21-year-old had been the passenger in a car that was pulled over for speeding when cops noticed the alleged drug stash.
According to the felony complaint, the driver of the car was also charged with one felony count of possession for sale of a controlled substance and one misdemeanor count of driving without a valid license.
Mejia is set to be arraigned on April 15

Success in music is no different than success in area of life. It takes hard work foremost, it never just “happens”. It’s why their are a million indie artist through all genres who will never get a nominal amount of fans or exposure, because they aren’t working as hard as it really takes to achieve success.
But it also depends on how you qualify your success. If you’re just trying to break even on what you put in then you’re good.

fair points, but consider two things:
hip hop heads are, most likely, more technology adept and willing to seek out good music. So you’ll prolly have a hard time being a pop star trying to be independent, but look at Drake. That mug did not really need to sign to Young Money or anybody except for the advance money.
The second thing is, if you have to be a stupendous talent to be successful, great. That’s good for hip hop, you know? If Waka Flocka, no shots at Waka (literally and figuratively), had to come up off mixtapes, would he be where
he is now? Nope. And people would happily download these songs by ringtone rappers and never have to worry about them clogging the game up again.

Just to put cats up on game, with most major digital distributors, like iTunes and amazon, you’ll make between 50 and 70 cents off each 99 cent download, and between $5 & $7 off each album download. So let’s say you bubble with a regional album and can sell 15,000 copies and you make $6 bucks off each one on average. That’s $90,000. Not enough money for you to buy a Bentley and pee on your boss’s desk,
but that’s a good living in most of the country and a great living in the rest. Meanwhile, if
you sell 15,000 on a major, you’ll never get to record with them again and if you do, they’re going to take an even bigger chunk out of your
dough.
