Video: Jay Electronica Praises Soulja Boy

Friday, February 26th, 2010

If you would have asked me this two years ago, I would have said lyricism was lacking. Like somebody would say Soulja Boy … you would say he’s not a lyricist, right? If you took a poll and said, ‘Is Soulja Boy a lyricist?’ People would say no, right?

But it’s not the words, it’s energy of what he does that’s the lyrics. It’s not the lyrics — the energy of it is the connector. The energy of it is greater than the words of it. In a sense, lyrics has been lacking in the contest of grammar and vocabulary, but the spirit and energy of it is never gone — or else the complete genre of hip-hop is gone.”

In the written piece, he lists all his separate upcoming projects with collaborators Nas, Lupe Fiasco, Mos Def, and Guilty Simpson. All of which he says you can expect this year.

Along with the album, Act III, this year too… Don’t hold your breath.

John Public – Keep Steppin’

Friday, February 26th, 2010

nahmean-front

Here’s another leak from our NahMean mixtape with John Public that’s dropping sometime next week. Stay tuned.

This track was both incredible and a gigantic pain in the ass to make. I got the original sequence from Goodwill Beats and spent literally months refining the flow. When I finally got it recorded at Willow Street, the engineer (Dave Entwistle) layered some guitars and we jacked Hendrix’s riff from “Purple Haze” as the lead melody, thinking it was a wrap. Numerous spins later tho, it felt too busy, so we stripped out the lead melody bells (which also had the original bassline in it). I sent it with just the drums, vox and flutes to my homie Jordan Scannella, and he laid a new bassline, added some Rhodes and piano stabs. Then I hit up DJay Cas to sequence some new drums. This joint was inspired by the Sensationalist Journalism episode. I think the third verse is pretty awesome.
