Others like J. Cole, really benefit from the association. I mean, it’s not like your gonna hear J. Cole on some guest verse or mixtape remix and go “Damn, he killed that” when you’re only half paying attention and flow is probably the most important thing as far as attracting your interest at the moment.

That’s your opinion, I happen to think he’s one of the guys that should get attention too, but I was mainly talking about how a rapper attracts new fans.
Most fans will not pay attention to lyrics the first time they hear a song [and they shouldn't, really]. After a few listens they’ll usually start to notice lines they like, or don’t.
