I agree. I have to admit I found out about J. Cole through that song with Jay-Z.
Certain rappers benefit from building hype without a label’s help for some time. Usually guys whose main calling card is their flow/delivery, like Gucci, Wayne [I know Wayne was on a label, but he did it mostly himself], etc. Or very proactive guys who have great networks and networking, like Drake. And Drake I found out about through the Lil Wayne association anyway.
Others like J. Cole, really benefit from the association. I mean, it’s not like your gonna hear J. Cole on some guest verse or mixtape remix and go “Damn, he killed that” when you’re only half paying attention and flow is probably the most important thing as far as attracting your interest at the moment.
