Most of those people had no fu*kin’ business being in that song.
Fu*kin’ Pussycat Dolls b*tch??!!
But I could deal with that. Because it’s for the cause.
But Weezy with that auto-tune sh*t. . . oh Lord. No!!
The sound. That came out of my mouth. Was the most agonizing sound. Ever. when I heard that shit.
“AAAALLLLLGLAGLHRRRRRHGLAHHGHLLHHGLAAHHHRHRHHHHH!!!”
And then the LL came in with the rapping.
I cannot believe Quincy Jones allowed this to happen. That dude needs new headphones.
And they put Micheal Jackson in the middle of that sh*t storm.
He G.O.A.T.ed all of them by the way . . .

pretty much man. it’s like that for now, because he doesn’t have a “true” body of work out, so even though he does have a lot of fans, they can’t really say anything to “come to his defense” so to say. if they do, it’s not based on anything concrete yet and they’ll just sound crazy. so it turns out, it only becomes his stans that are willing to speak up for him… and most of the time, stans don’t always like an artist for the right reasons
but when he’ll finally drop an album, a real debate can start. a “dialogue.” instead of people insulting dude and his fans being like: “word… there’s nothing I can say to contradict that…”

He will NEVER make another a milli. He has neither the flow/deliver, nor the personality for that type of song.
This isn’t a knock against him either. None of the rapper doing remixes of that song, including Jay or Fab knew what to do to outshine Wayne.
There was a song on So Far Gone, called “Say What’s Real” over the “Say You Will” beat from 808s where he was great, and almost approached Kanye levels of sincerity and expressive ability. If he can improve on that he’s going to be a problem.

No…he’s definately put out enough material for people to sort of get what he’s about and therefore defend him. He’s had a few mixtapes out.
Or else how would you justify the people who attack him? They wouldn’t know enough either.
If someone in the 90s decided Nas was a great rapper after only hearing Illmatic would you say he was just some unjustified Nas stan? I know albums are different from mixtapes, but So Far Gone wasn’t an average mixtape effort, he really wanted to do something with that.

If Drake want’s to sell a million in the first week, that single better be a goshdarn hit.
Lollipop was the biggest song of the year in 2008, and is one of the biggest songs of the decade if you look at it. And it REALLY helped push Tha Carter 3′s sales. Granted, Drake already has the underage white girl market locked, but still…
You need to have 3 things:
-Serious online buzz, and not just on blogs like this, or Wale would’ve atleast did Gucci #’s. Online buzz like whoever comments on the mtv.com articles, those folks. Like FANS who will push you onto other like crazy. Wayne had that.
-Respect within the hip hop community, which is shown by people wanting you to jump on their songs and stuff.
-A big hit close to the album release, to keep you on the radio with one of your OWN songs that’ll be on your OWN album. Drake can definitel pull this off, Best I Ever Had was big.
^Drake’s got the first two, he just needs number three.

i’ve been mulling ova this. for the most part, YM is made up of artists that personably have their own lanes, right. drake has talent and most of his music is dope. howeva, when you see him perform or take in videos his personality looks like someone else. the only time i see drake for what he really is is when he’s doing interviews. he talks very intelligent, very little use of ebonics, very engaging and coherent when asked questions. theeeeen, you hear him on a record w/bun b, sounding like bun. you hear him w/wayne sounding like wayne. you see him on stage posturing like hov. i don’t really know what to make of him as an artist of personal integrity cause he gauges a lot of other artists “swag”.

Actually this could very well end up like it did with Game. A guy with big underground buzz get picked up by the biggest labels, works with the best and it pushed onto everyone before he can really develop.
Although personally I think Drake’s better than Game. Drake doesn’t have the personality, but he has good instincts otherwise. He knows how to interact with the production on a song better than a lot of rappers. But this doesn’t detract from your point.

Yeah, but he’s not supposed to sound like the rapper he’s collaborating with in the song. When Wayne jumps on a song he doesn’t borrow the other rappers style, he may feed off it, but that’s it.

__________________________________________
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
no, actually there is sufficient material for people to judge his music and artistry.
Being a “big deal” does not compell an artist to be “hip-hop” by default. He is a big deal, but to who? Portions of mainstream culture that appreciate and gravitate to pop music. The brother is a pop artist that uses punch lines and rhyme, but it don’t make him an Mc. The only difference between him and vanilla ice is teh co-signs. He is light skin and has a background in nickelodian enterntainment (like timberlake or spears in the mickey mouse club), which makes him the perfect commodity to market to mainstream media outlets and fans. From a purist perspective, at what point does he represent elements of the culture in his personal background or experience. In other words, within the collective drake experience, where are there elements of the hip-hop value system.
In accepting this kid, what the pop industry–or rather the culture industry–is doing and forcing is an assimilation and approproation of hip-hop. Why? Yeah, but he’s not supposed to sound like the rapper he’s collaborating with in the song. When Wayne jumps on a song he doesn’t borrow the other rappers style, he may feed off it, but that’s it.

February 13th, 2010 at 6:02 pm
So you’re saying you have heard enough to say he’s “wack” but people can’t say they’ve heard enough to say he’s good?
And why exactly shouldn’t he be in discussions about hip hop? He’s kinda like a big deal…
Why? Because the hip-hop genre itslef will lose its artistic, class identity and foundation, and, as aresult, lose its mark as genre in and of itself and just be pop, and before you know it there will be more k-feds and even jonas brothas on the mic. Im just sayin……
—————————————————
As far as the first point about enough music to put into persepctive, my bad, I assumed you were agreeing with nation because you said “true”.
As far as the second goes, you really don’t have to look far to find inauthentic rappers as far as credibility go [Ross, Wayne,], or rapper who choose to have pop influences [subject matter wise- LL did love songs, Ja Rule comes to mind].
I kind of see where you’re going with Drake paving the way for people outside of the culture to join in. But I’m not really gonna blame HIM. This was going to happen sooner or later, and it’s not like the industry wasn’t deep into hip hop already [pause].
Nor will Drake do it on his own. MC Hammer couldn’t, Vanilla Ice couldn’t. The only thing that’ll mark this shift is a large shift in hip hop’s audience, which has ALREADY HAPPENED this decade. That’s why hip hop finally replaced rock as the “rebel music” of choice for the youth, somewhere early on in the 00s.
Cliffnotes: Drake’s just a side effect of what you’re saying, not the cause or the prime mover. So we may as well judge him for what he’s trying to do and if he succeeds, as well as the standard criteria for judging a rapper. FWIW, he’s being true to himself, he’s just not really “cool” by anyone here’s standards.
February 13th, 2010 at 6:19 pm

Um…please contextualize what I did there if your going to dispute the point. I didn’t say they were both equals, I was making the point that you could judge an artist by as little as one album, since anyone could tell Nas was a talent from Illmatic.
Is that such a ridiculous point.
And you, COIS, you agreed with my saying you could make an accurate assescment of Drake at this point. I though we had a nice discussion, let’s not resort to these things.

^one of the most painful truths I have to deal with. Eventhough I side with Beenie in this debate, I can also understand Jay’s perspective. It’s pretty fuckin hard to watch the cats you grew up with fall to the wayside in form or another as life goes on. It really fucking sucks to log onto facebook and see new pics of your best friend since grade school acting like he’s still in junior high. Except he’s not acting. This has become everyday life for him. Weed, bitches, booze, new gear, no gas, no job, no liscence, no electricity & two kids. And the worst part is that he’s not the only one that I personally know. It makes me sick to know that I stood by for years and watched this develop – like a train wreck in HD super slow mo.

Nas – Victory ft John Legend
[DJ Khaled]
They doubted me all my life
Now it’s victory
(DJ KHALED!)
[John Legend]
Whatever it is, I’ll pay the cost
I’m willing to risk it, I’ll take the loss
I’ll put it all on the line
In a hustler’s state of mind
I’m gonna make history
Just so we can claim victory (Victory)
Oh, victory (Victory)
(Nasir!)
[Nas]
Speedboats, three tokes and pass it
Grass lit, hittin’ slopes in Aspen
No coat, just an oath to stay thorough ’til we back to ashes
Driven in fly sedans to the MGM Grand
Picture lots of sand, two blondes, implants
Remy in hand, we tryna tan, deal my cards with an honest hand
A modest man, aware of any counter-scam
Palm trees, magnum Don Ps, LV monograms
Hottest girls flew from Rio
Mojitos, mucho frio, my libido
Sex so strong, without the E, though
Hollow threats, we don’t see those
Higher death toll whenever we roll
That process is pivotal
My pitiful poverty-struck criminals will get a Jew
Then we lounge in a Spanish-style house
‘Til it all blows over, Dolce Gabbana out
Contemplatin’, there is no bond with Satan
Say a little prayer for me like Aretha Franklin
For my hustlers, here’s some motivation
He who has begun is half done, why you waitin’?
I’m too impatient to pray, too much patience for stress
It’s too much paper to rest, fuck around, you face death
I know some niggas from Astoria
That’ll cut your daughter up
Like I used to cut a quarter up
Makin’ all the bucks, banana clips I bought in Georgia bucks
Kill all you fucks, easy
I be on the golf cart, sleepy
Y’all beneath me
Y’all be at the pawn shop, pawnin’ watches
Obnoxious, can’t stop us, we shottas
Say you killin’ Pablo? Impossible
Nonsense, preposterous, bizarre at best
Unfulfilled promises
I feel intelligence is my wealth
However, how enormous is Nas’ pockets is a pop quiz to gossipers
See me at the Oscars, lookin’ dreamy, hood opulent
Means esoteric, how I wore it
Exoticness makes you curious to see how serious my closet is
Shareholders wanna invest in that Nas stock, it’s just
We be on that real shit, luxury four-wheel shit
Niggas actin’ thirst on some just-got-a-deal shit
Ha, for that victory we will kill shit
Get out the way, playboy, this is real shit
(Khaled!)
Whatever it is, I’ll pay the cost
I’m willing to risk it, I’ll take the loss
I’ll put it all on the line
In a hustler’s state of mind
