Complex and illRoots gave him a little shine but there wasn’t even a mention of the tape on Nah Right, a site that posts an inordinate amount of music from unproven/untalented rappers that most people could give two shits about. No knock on Eskay & Co., because for every bullshit post there are usually 3 posts with content I’m actually interested in. But this one seemed like an odd omission. I mean, they devoted an entire post to a bunch of kids in the comment section rapping over Jay Electronica’s “Exhibit C” beat.

So stoked about his new album, too. Just based on that freestyle he did at that Kid Cudi show. You just know he’s gonna make the perfect beat to go under that and that as great as those lines were at the show, they’re gonna sound way more powerful on his album. Guy’s too honest, it’s amazing.

But you’ve got to give him credit for finding the guy and going that route with the album. It really was a foreword thinking album. And the lyrics were really great.
People who think Kanye Wests lyrics are bad [on the first two LP's] are the kind of people who think “Gold Digger” was just about gold diggers.

He had the potential to be the first to really do it. He had the forces, artists, team and movement behind him. He possessed a unique mix being clean-cut enough to get the corporate brands drooling, while still credible enough in the streets to be respected. Drake had the opportunity to completely change the landscape of the music business, yet at the end of the day stopped one step short from becoming a true pioneer.

Ehhh, he’s not really the kind of artist that gets owned by the industry. Kid sounds like he knows what he’s doing and he’s managed by some of the best. Guy’s who get owned by the industry are guys who despite being great musicians are clueless otherwise…think Beanie Siegel or even some child star who wasn’t capable of handling it, like Britney Spears. Drake more like Justin Timberlake, he seems like he’ll handle it.

And I’d still say that he made the right choice overall with going to a label. I don’t think he’d be as big as he is now, even if he was quite big before the deal.
The deal made him a star almost as big as Kanye or Wayne or Jay, actually bigger than Jay as far as advertisers SHOULD care, and they will when his album comes out. Once his first week numbers come in and he’s proves he’s not just unwarranted hype, the rest of the entertainment industry will be rushing to capitalize on him. And unlike he Wayne, he’ll be sober enough to make the most of that. [Sidenote: If he tried, Wayne could've earned way more in 2009 with the fame he had/has]

That’s true, and you’re right that Brion’s well respected. Worked with some big artists. Fiona Apple, I think. And she’s good. Although “Gone” wasn;t co produced by Brion I think, and it was pretty great. But yeah your point still stands.

oversaturation is the word. he’s gonna be (is) everywhere and soon people will come to expect a certain sound from him because his image is being cemented by all of these big appearances. SFG was experimental and because there was a sense of mystery to him there were no expectations. He should’ve let the music speak for itself and let nature take it’s course. People gobble shit up and spit it out so quick these days that i think the best thing to do if you got someone as marketable as Drake is to keep the people wanting more…flood the world with his music and keep him in the shadows- the kid could’ve been massive (n) But he went for the fast money and now he’s just another part of the YM circus…..he fucked up imo
but at the same time i honestly think the industry would’ve put up roadblocks to his success had he gon independent. They wouldn’t have allowed him to revolutionize the game single-handedly and without them getting a cut.

I must have misinterpreted what you meant earlier, I agree with this. Another part of it to me is that he’s not the kind of artist that can really continue to be everywhere like this, since as much as I think he’s a talented guy, his aesthetic is something that hasn’t become complex enough to keep people interested. People know what he’s all about.
Wayne at least kept changing from 06-08 while he was releasing songs everywhere. With Drake he’s BEEN spent the year killing people on their own songs, but hasn’t really changed much as an artist. And with the overexposure you mentioned, people are gonna get used to him quick.
And in that respect I guess he’s not like Timberlake. JT’s sort’ve disappeared in order to maintain interest in him long term. And no doubt when he comes back JT will find the new hot producer and reinvent himself with that guys help.
Anyway good points, sir.

Paul Schurick, Ehrlich’s communications manager, claimed that the Kathleen Kennedy Townsend campaign had handed out Oreo cookies to the audience.[22] Five days later, Steele said that one or more Oreo cookies had rolled to his feet during the debate suggesting a racist statement against him, that of being black on the outside and white on the inside like an Oreo. “Maybe it was just someone having their snack, but it was there,” Steele said. “If it happened, shame on them if they are that immature and that threatened by me.” More than three years after the debate, when Steele was running for the U.S. Senate, Schurick claimed “It was raining Oreos… They were thick in the air like locusts. I was there. It was very real. It wasn’t subtle.”[23] In a November 2005 Hannity and Colmes appearance, Steele agreed with Hannity that cookies were thrown at him during the September 2002 debate.[24] Neil Duke of the Baltimore NAACP, who moderated the debate, praised the “passionate audience” and noted that “derisive behavior” had occurred.[22] but did not see Oreo-throwing. “Were there some goofballs sitting in [the] right-hand corner section tossing cookies amongst themselves and acting like sophomores, as the legend has it?” Duke said. “I have no reason to doubt those sources; I just didn’t see it.”

And no, I’m not a former commentator. I don’t know how to prove it to you, nor will I try to. But ask yourselves if my writing style even remotely resembles any commentators here.
I think it’s awful that a man can’t discuss youth-oriented music because he’s an old Republican. Some of you have used some very strong language, racist even, to describe someone who hasn’t done anything but discuss hip hop on here.

only problem with Venemous Villain is that DOOM/Vaughn is only rapping for like 23 minutes on the whole CD, but when he does its state of the art rhyming and ill demented gothic inspired beats … MMFood is kinda ol skool Doom, almost KMD sounding …
—–
I agree Doom’s rhymes on VV are crazy, but those beats were underwhelming IMO. That joint on MM Food where he rhymes over the Anita Baker sample > anything on VV.

@Sleep
GTFOH with that white apologist shit.John Mayer was outta pocket, period.Your mentality and acceptance is the reason he felt comfortable enough to say that stupid shit. There was a million other choices of words he could’ve used to say what he said. The interviewer was coming from a fuck up place with the questions and this jackass just took the baton.Of course they say worse shit behind closed doors but to go public with it he crossed the line.Niggas that’s not offended don’t get it(n).And that’s unfortunate for them.

http://www.playboy.com/articles/john-mayer-playboy-interview/index.html?page=2
Yup.
And let me tell you, I never gave him this “hood pass” or whatever that is…
February 11th, 2010 at 9:54 am
MAYER: It depends on what I picked up. My two biggest hits are “Your Body Is a Wonderland” and “Daughters.” If you think those songs are pandering, then you’ll think I’m a douche bag. It’s like I come on very strong. I am a very…I’m just very. V-E-R-Y. And if you can’t handle very, then I’m a douche bag. But I think the world needs a little very. That’s why black people love me.
PLAYBOY: Because you’re very?
MAYER: Someone asked me the other day, “What does it feel like now to have a hood pass?” And by the way, it’s sort of a contradiction in terms, because if you really had a hood pass, you could call it a nigger pass. Why are you pulling a punch and calling it a hood pass if you really have a hood pass? But I said, “I can’t really have a hood pass. I’ve never walked into a restaurant, asked for a table and been told, ‘We’re full.’”
PLAYBOY: It is true; a lot of rappers love you. You recorded with Common and Kanye West, played live with Jay-Z.
MAYER: What is being black? It’s making the most of your life, not taking a single moment for granted. Taking something that’s seen as a struggle and making it work for you, or you’ll die inside. Not to say that my struggle is like the collective struggle of black America. But maybe my struggle is similar to one black dude’s.
PLAYBOY: Do black women throw themselves at you?
MAYER: I don’t think I open myself to it. My dick is sort of like a white supremacist. I’ve got a Benetton heart and a fuckin’ David Duke cock. I’m going to start dating separately from my dick.
PLAYBOY: Let’s put some names out there. Let’s get specific.
MAYER: I always thought Holly Robinson Peete was gorgeous. Every white dude loved Hilary from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. And Kerry Washington. She’s superhot, and she’s also white-girl crazy. Kerry Washington would break your heart like a white girl. Just all of a sudden she’d be like, “Yeah, I sucked his dick. Whatever.” And you’d be like, “What? We weren’t talking about that.” That’s what “Heartbreak Warfare” is all about, when a girl uses jealousy as a tactic.

You gotta read the article yourself. He was saying alot of wild shit. Talking about a hood pass = a nigger pass, and some things about black women could be taken as disrespectful. He and the interviewer sounded all over the place IMO.
BTW does John Mayer have a hood pass? I never hear niggas playing John Mayer at the barbershop.

That’s what I took from it too initially. But all he basically said was the idea of a hood pass is ridiculous, and that he’s not attracted to black women. I’m still lost on why the interviewer assumed he had a hood pass to begin with though.

because this is what blackness is to so many whites, and is blantantly racist. It’s representative of how a great deal of white america views the black community – as eternal sufferers, as if that is our birthright….and then that being chic somehow.
honestly, to a degree it is our own fault because we’ve made it cool. We glorify our struggles more than any other group.

This sounds strange coming from John Mayer. But its kinda accurate though. The “die inside” part was kinda extra, but still.
February 11th, 2010 at 10:14 am
….but it’s this kind of mentality that works to dehumanize our suffering….as if somehow we are better equipped to deal with shitty situations and therefore our life is less fragile or worthy of care.
