I know I’m late to the talk about rap labels and stuff, but Rocafella does not deserve to be mentioned alongside the labels like Cash Money-Young Money or Aftermath. CM-YM and Aftermath are two labels that have withstood trends and have pushed NEW artists in DIFFERENT periods of hip hop.
The only thing that makes Rocafella seem like a label that’s survived different trends in hip hop is Kanye West. The problem with using him, is he changed his sound on his own and has set trends on his own; it’s not like Rocafella found new artists to push when those new trends were set. And frankly, after the very beginning where he was learning the ropes, it seems like every success Kanye has had has been despite his label. Jay didn’t want him to rap, Dame wanted his first album to be a group album, etc.
And let’s not even get to Jay-Z being an artist that has survived trends. That was true pre-retirement. But after, he’s got a shitty comeback album, an old school sounding album that distracted people from his inability to improve as a rapper, and now BP3-basically a Kanye West produced album with Jay-Z rapping about the same shit as always. His name and his connections, and his familiar voice. That’s Jay call to success now. He’s not a progressive rapper, no matter what he or his stans say [he was though].

Cash Money seemed dead/irrelevant for a while, but then Wayne brought them back, and now they’ve found new artists like Drake, Jay Sean [no homo], Kevin Rudolf [maybe] and Nikki Minaj who are look like they’re going to be very big. The hip hop landscape is completely different from when Cash Money had their first prosperous period, and they’ve managed to come back.
Aftermath has done that, too. I personally feel like the audience of hip hop has changed so much that the only way Aftermath will ever rise to a new period of dominance again is if Dre decides to shed the hardgore gangsta rap aesthetic his label has had overall, and changes his production style again. But regardless, they have been dominant in different periods of hip hop.
What makes me think of CM-YM as being a better hip hop label as far as being run only by the people on the label, is the fact that Jimmy Iovine [of Interscope Records] has always had a big role in Aftermath. Say what you will about Jimmy, he’s a genius and he was the one who introduced Eminem to Dr. Dre. Dre probably had way more to do with Em’s artistic development, though, credit where it’s due. But Eminem being the biggest artist- and not just in hip hop, but all pop music- of the time is what ends up allowing Dre’s new sound to get popular, thus reviving Dre’s solo career, and setting up the careers of 50 Cent [who got a big push from Em], and the Game [who in turn got a big push from 50 Cent].
Aftermath is sort of a combination of major label expertise [Iovine] on the part of finding new talent and marketing, and smaller label [Dr. Dre] expertise on the part of artistic development. CM-YM seems like almost all the work on it’s “second win” was done on the inside of the small label.
So yeah, AS A WELL RUN LABEL, I give it to Cash Money. Baby seems like an aging junkie, but apparently he’s doing something right.

the roc is long over, done. i mean, the traditional roc. just like the traditional cash money. new era. blueprint 3 has sold over 1.6 milli just in the us. he went plat in canda and gold in the uk. carter 3 does similar numbers. birdman ain’t sellin, nicki might sell if she tries to act like trina harder. drake ain’t signed to cash money lol. young money album? whaddup dynasty album. shit, that first roccafella mixtape probably sold more than the cash money album has.
you can’t compare kanye, an established winning grammy artist, to anyone in the bummy mixtape crew aka cash money. maybe beans and bleek, but hey, at least they have albums and hits. even at that, roc nation running with j. cole, rhianna, (who’s pushing ‘ye’s next album now the white world shuns him), wale (this dude is a herb, but his production was on point).
wayne’s career is in his infancy, he’s trying to build himself a group of weed carriers. shout out to baby for being that strong handed ninja though. he’s grifted his way through some shit and is sitting on some money. the real test is what he does with everyone once wayne’s gone.

—————————————————————-
A LOT of false points and bad logic in that post….
-First off, Wayne and Jay are not doing “similar numbers”. Tha Carter III is 3x platinum- that’s 3 mill in the US, almost twice what BP3 has done. And before you mention that TC3 has been out longer, keep in mind that it sold 2.88 million in 2008 alone. BP3 did 470,000 in it’s first week, TC3 does 430,000 in it’s first DAY, and then a milli for the week.
-And even if you were right [you're not], Jay’s recent album is NOT ON ROCAFELLA, it’s on ROC NATION. Tha Carter 3 was still a CM release, it’s just it was also a Young Money release, too.
-no one was comparing Kanye to the newer crop of YM guys. My point was that he’s done most of his work despite his label, and most of his success happened after the roc broke up.
-I hope J. Cole does well, but Wale flopped. Hard [pause]. And Rihanna is NOT a Rocafella artist, nor is she on Roc Nation. She’s on Def Jam.
-Wayne’s career is not in it’s “infancy”….LOL
-Yes, CM-YM may reap less sales nominally, but there are two things to consider. It’s probably the dominant rap label of today, and is in it’s second win, which the roc never had. And record sales are down everywhere. CM-YM are about to have the 2 of the 3 biggest rappers on their label [Wayne and Drake], all that’s waiting is for Thank Me Later to come out. And maybe the biggest female rapper out, if that worth something. And Jay Sean [no homo] may end up doing just fine.

————————————————————
I wouldn’t blame the split on that either. I’m just pointing out that they couldn’t push any artists when trends changed, and never had the second win a REALLY good label like Aftermath would have. Splitting up is no excuse for that, splitting up is one way for a label to fail.
And I liked Rocafella and recognize that they had a lot of potential, and accomplished a lot anyway. I’m just making sure my being a fan doesn’t get in the way of reasoning….

I know, once again our weaknesses are exposed by an experienced team. Counter attack, and we need some more height. Nasri, Arshavin, Fabregas, Denilson all small, we need a big strong defensive midfielder, Alonso would have been perfect. Another season, another heartbreaker. Something has to give soon, or Fabregas will leave and we are back at square one. Every season with us it’s ‘this is the season’ and Wenger talks about how young the team is, we have been ‘young’ for years now. We need some big transfers, big names and big money.

Then 4/5 people on the streets would be wrong, really. I’m not talking about caliber of music, but the Roc wasn’t really that big when compared to a lot of labels, and they didn’t last like the labels I mentioned. They DID have a phenomenal roster, in my opinion.

That’s a hard fucking question.
At their best, Rooney, Drogba, and Torres are all virtually unstoppable.
Torres tends to be injury prone which is his main downfall. Those 3 are definetly the three best, then there’s other players which on their day can be great too like Van Persie, Defoe (even though I fucking hate him) Bent, Saha, Adebayor etc.

I guess if you had to choose one label, the obvious answer is Def Jam. They were the big guys from the 80s to early 90s, and then reinvented themselves as a mega-rap label that worked with the smaller labels. Sort of an intermediary between Universal and a lot of the new rap labels.
Rocafella
Ruff Ryders
Disturbing tha Peace
Murder Inc.
etc.
It just doesn’t FEEL like a rap label after Russell and Rick become less involved…so I don’t know.
