but more artist from the south are selling more records than any other region currently
^^
That was the case two years ago. Unlike the crunk and Houston explosions, songs like “Fresh like a Million Bucks” and “Ice Cream Paintjob” have not caught on popularity wise in other markets. Gucci hasnt hit gold, and was outperformed by Kid Cudi. Like cats said in the last post, the only artists that sold anything signifigant last year were Jay, Em, and 50. Whether they are considered regional is irrelevant to your original point, which was that cats from the south are selling more. That is not true.

We need stat sheets, someone up the top 20 rap albums of 09′ for some reason I got a feeling that the south would have more artist on there, even tho the north niggas sold the most albums.
Besides Jay, em, 50, cudi and raekwon, I can’t think of any up north rappers moving units.
February 3rd, 2010 at 2:15 pm
Nicki came down south to switch her flow up….Drake had to rap and sound like he from the south to get acceptance…
^^
Whether this is true or not really doesnt matter in regards to the point you were originally trying to make. Carter 3 dropped almost 18 months ago, and Ross is coming off of his worst selling album to date (tho conversely, it was also his best reviewed).
So when you say the South is selling more, what artists are you referring to exactly?
February 3rd, 2010 at 2:17 pm

^^
NOBODY’S moving units. Every region/genre/type of hiphop is now for specific niche audiences, even Drake to a certain extent. The playing field is as even as its ever been. The only rappers selling (Jay, Em, and 50) are “superstars”, and were selling before the bottom dropped out of the industry.

But is there much of a difference between selling 50k and 100k. I’d be willing to bet Fab and Jada sold close to what Ross and Gucci did. Not sure though, so we do need some stats.

So Cudi is a rapper?
^^
To me personally? Not really. To the Grammy’s and the music aisles in Best Buy? Yes. And for this debate, thats all that really matters.
February 3rd, 2010 at 2:20 pm
>NOBODY’S moving units.
^True, but I have this gut feeling (n) that it’s more south artist in the top 20 than up north rappers, and I think that was the point boosie was tryna make. And like you said, all of the top selling artist was selling units before the drop in record sales

February 3rd, 2010 at 2:20 pm
FACT: Since the emergence of southern rap the most used phrase I hear is”i don’t even listen to rap no more”.
@Boosie
For whatever point you’re trying to make just look at the state of the culture, are you really proud?People don’t even care about hip hop like they used to.It’s like the south is fucking a fat busted bitch that was bad in high school.

So Cudi is a rapper?
Now those numbers are skewed because Jayz and Em has been established and are known to sell a lot of records each time out. If we take a look at artist who are selling and are having success according to numbers today, then more artist from the south are selling records…
The top rappers that are selling a huge amount of records are from the north, but there are more rappers selling records in the south. Wayne didnt drop a conventional album last year, Tip was Locked up. Jeezy didn’t put an album out last year. The middle players from the south far outweigh the middle players in any region.

its a great time for hiphop…not for those who are in hiphop strictly for making $$$…but the dumb down, gimmicks etc aint selling or rather the real hiphop is selling pretty much the same…this even playing field could bring back the integrity of the music….a renaissance is on the horizon… i can feel it (nh)

I dont think thats the point Boos was trying to make though. Its alot of wack shit coming out of all regions though. Maino sucks just as bad as Ace Hood IMO.

For every artist from the south, you can name someone who matched them from another region. Unless the point is that theres more southern artists with record deals.

Artist and New artist in the south are selling at a rate that can’t be duplicated by rappers up north in today’s time…to Boosie, plies, rich kids, ross, stanky leg boys, the next nigga to come up with some dance and others that are putting out mixtape work as well.
