Joe Budden is the kind of rapper that needs artistic direction from someone that he highly respects in the business. Anyone that thinks he’s not a dope lyricist is a hater and therefore should not be paid attention. Mouse’s music is not really bad and not really good. The true definition of mediocre. I personally think that he could be a really great artist with some musical direction on how to craft songs. That is his only real flaw as an artist. If this Slaughterhouse to Shady Records thing is truly legit then he would be the one artist out of the whole crew that would benefit greatly from being with Em in the studio because him and Em sort of share the same type of subject matter when it comes to the music: baby mother issues, bouts of depression, etc. This dude really has a sense of humor but you don’t get to really hear that in any of his music. With this track lyrically there is nothing wrong but we’ve heard this sort of thing from Joe before. 70+ bars of him just spazzing out. He can do that in his sleep. All of the great rappers of our time had people who they respected in their corners telling them what sounded hot and what didn’t and what direction they should look into exploring and I think Joe is just winging it and no one in his camp is bold enough to step up and say that track isn’t all that hot. Mind you, I have all of Joe’s music including the Mood Musik joints. But for now Joe is just a well conditioned athlete on a football team that can out work everyone in the gym but can’t perform in the actual game. To be considered one of the greatest rappers of all time or to even being mentioned you need to have the music to compete with the big boys and unfortunately he doesn’t have the music. I mean Michael Eric Dyson just released a book breaking down Nas’ Illmatic album. That’s impactful music. I need Joe to step it up a notch.

@Carlos Voltron – nope not Land
@hl – he is a good lyricist but you need to be more than a good lyricist to be in any top 10 discussion in my opinion. All of the great rappers have had someone to mentor them in their careers and it seem at this point Joe hasn’t had anyone show him how to make impactful or influential music. and yes he does have cornball ways to him.
@The Truth – no hate in my blood. his bars are always potent but you need more than potent bars to be a top shelf mc. and i have all of joe’s music so i’m a fan who wants joe to be bigger than he already is.

January 9th, 2010 at 6:28 pm
LongWinded, save you pedantic rhetoric for those who cares. Joe is an absolute beast lyrically (in my humble opinion) and has made countless classic songs and has even made two classic albums with MM2 and MM3. Mediocre would be Raekwon -which you are probably a stan of for whatever reason (which to me is flabbergasting). No, that would be subpar. If you took his di*k out of your mouth for more than the 2 minutes daily it takes you to brush your teeth.
Joe could have been more accessible with Padded Room (though I thought it was still a good album) but from what I’ve heard, The Great Escape sounds like its going to be a great piece of a work.
January 9th, 2010 at 6:58 pm
him and Rae have two totally different styles…i grew up listenin to that raw, flossy, gritty dark hip hop so imo he cant fuck w Rae or Nas, AZ, Cormega Sean Price or Kiss shit Beans neither…yea he got them bars cant take credit from duke but he a fag and all his shit sound the same and the nigga got no style/pizzazz, hate to use the word swag but dude got none…all his is some bars no image
January 9th, 2010 at 8:28 pm
@restlessbx
if you read what i said you would see that i share your view on joe being nice lyrically. now if we are to start talking classic songs and classic albums then you would know that the general hip hop population don’t share the same view as you as it relates to joe having any classic hip hop songs or albums. this is not to say that there are not joe fans that believe that the majority of his discography is filled with classic material but you won’t find any hip hop album review anywhere on a blog, website, magazine, etc that uses joe budden and clasisc in the same sentence. And who said i had rae’s dick in my mouth? i’m quick to point out any artist that dropping wack shit. i remember immobilarity and lex diamonds story being wack as shit but the first cuban linx is classic the first wu album is classic and this 2nd cuban linx album is better than expected. and like @suvio-blue said they both have 2 different styles so it really wouldn’t even be fair to either of them to put them up against one another.
@suvio-blue
definitely cornball ways. too much time online trying to be a hip hop truman show and not enough time in the booth. are his best years behind him, sure but that doesn’t mean the don’t have the ability to at least put out 1 across the board cohesive top self quality album. he just won’t have one of those runs that very few artists do and drop quality album after quality album. his arrogance doesn’t match his catalogue. and i totally agree, majority of his stuff sounds the same.
January 9th, 2010 at 8:32 pm

From what I learned is niggas really hate buddens or they love him ain’t no I b/w but 1 thing niggas can’t deny is that he can spit flames and prolly rap circles around ur fav rapper. MM2 and MM3 were classic and well put together albums. I hav all budden material and I too think he would benifit from someone in his corner helping him pick beats and working on sequencing and all that. All the greats hav this. Biggie had puff, jay had dame and them.
January 9th, 2010 at 8:45 pm
@lonngwind
Cuban linx 1 was classic cause of the WU, ghost, meth, deck and rza and others. Like u pointed out he hasn’t put out anything fire on his own.
Agree buddens needs to drop that classic album if he’s going to keep claiming to be the best
I know ecape route was supposed to be a mixtape but the quality of that shit was horrible, it sounded like it was done in a basement some where. Had some classic songs on there too
January 9th, 2010 at 10:14 pm
really its all to the listeners ear…thats why we gotta be open i like Buddens cuz what he does for hip hop, but his shit just dont keep me movin, my mans burnt a Mood Musiz pt suntin for me “Young Nizzas” i bumped the hell outta that, i liked that shit…and other various songs but other than that he just dont hold me he touched one good element of the Machine we call “artist” …thats wordplay thoughproking tru, thats it…he got no style, no stamp, he corny, he a punk, no street cred, punkbound he just got a crew…thats wack besides Joell, Mickey Facts, cmon…the funniest shit, i know its old but look up the them Philly DJs talkin bout the tape, they saw the whole thing…they tell the story 3 dudes Raekwon his man, natural most niggas have 8 niggas, and the camera man, Joey, Mickey Facts..Joeys other 2 mans…all them niggas suckered up, dont blame Rae cuase his mans dont like u, thats what real goons do, impress the Capt…Yea imma Rae fan

using 50 cent and jay-z just proves my point on having someone schoolin/mentoring you on the game and how to approach creating hip hop music. 50 was mentored by jam master jay then trackmasters when he made power of a dollar. just by being with those two entities enabled him to go on his mixtape run early in the 2000 decade which led him to em and dre who further schooled him on the game and how to create even bigger hits and be the monster that he is now. jay was mentored by big daddy kane after being wit jaz. jay also benefited from having a strong team of supporters backing him making sure he didn’t release any wack shit. his team was dame, biggs, clark kent and irv gotti to mention a few. the difference is that those 2 guys had these mentors early into their careers. my thing is that i would like to see joe get the guidance from someone of the stature of the mentors i just mention and see what he can create from that. and to say an artist can’t start making songs years later but that’s exactly what happened with lil wayne. nobody really cared about wayne till the carter III. and i know about all of the mixtape music but and the previous carters but the general hits are on the carter III and now lil wayne is a superstar so anything is possible especially in hip hop. just need the right support system.

You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make it drink. 50 worked with JMJ & trackmasters but 50 found his niche early in the game and what was going to seperate him from the rest. Puff put Big in Coogi and all that but if BIG didn’t have the personality of a playa before hand then it would have never worked. BDK mentored Jay-Z just as much as Clue mentored Joe yet Fab went somewhere, Jay went to the top and Joe B never went anywhere. You cant teach clutch and you can’t teach a nigga to want to take the last shot in the game. A spade is a spade..Joe has always embraced the idea of being a LOSER..bitching about his label for years, pimpin his private life, talking shit about niggaz unsolicited and getting swerved on. Nobody likes losers in life. 50 could have bitched initially because nothing was going right but he found something that worked and people loved him because niggaz love success stories. How did nobody care about Wayne until the Carter 3 if the nigga ran late 06-2007? lol…Listen there is no problem with you being a fan of Joe B…he can rap but if we are going to be real then lets be real.

If you need someone to tell you how to be great, you are not great! Who told Rakim what to do? Who told Kool G Rap. No ONE! That is what’s wrong with Hip Hop. People need to think for themselves, and do what is true to their heart. Not go….”I wonder what everyone else will like?” That is not Hip Hop!
