Furious Styles & DJ Dub Present: Jay Electronica - Victory (Mixtape)
Some of that he-could-pass-a-polygraph for the weekend.
Says Dub & Furious Styles:
“In the current state of music, an artist like Jay (Electronica) deserves the attention of anyone who even THINKS they like Hip-Hop. We’re not saying that he’s the savior but he’s been working on the humble for years and Exhibit C opened him up to the world. World, meet Jay Electronica…support his victory for Hip-Hop.” - DJ DUB
“I truly believe that everyman has a story and Jay Electronica’s story is definitely the current soundtrack to Hip-Hop. He makes the impossible seem possible. Dub and I wanted to share his soundtrack with those that were unfamiliar. Let’s welcome back the lyricists to Hip- Hop.” - DJ FURIOUS STYLES

Yo, I am so sick of the hyperbole that consumes every bloggers soul when it relates to Jay Electronica that I can’t see straight. He’s dope, but the overboard comments that are made about someone who has accomplished little-to-nothing in the game just shits on other (like-minded) artists who toil in obscurity, who don’t have major co-signs, or who don’t have a grammy-award winning producer giving you music you could fart over and go platinum with. Shit just makes me uninterested in his “story,” and even less in his “victory.”

Neither is Elec’s, real talk. He’s just a throwback to mid90s Wu Tang esque hiphop (Killah Priest in particular), that sounds fresh because we haven’t heard this style done well in over 10 years. Drake and Elec are pretty derivative , Drake just seems moreso because he’s aping artists that are current.

True. And it didn’t help that BP3 was actually wack. Jay and Nas are legends, so when they release something subpar critics let them have it. Those are two of the illest no doubt though. It happens all the time. On the low Prodigy has release several good albums post G-Unit. But because Mobb Deep’s legacy is so strong it gets dismissed. Just how it is.
January 9th, 2010 at 11:22 pm

It did as far as giving Hov beats he could spaz on. But that wasn’t the point of BP3. The goal of that album seemed to be making Jay sonically relevant to the younger generation, which he lost on KC and AG. And in that respect, the LP succeeded.
AG and BP3 are both dope, but neither is the Hov we all crowned GOAT.

With that said, as dope as AG was, it didn’t sound like the “year in my life” diary entries that Hov made his name on and used to create his LPs. And granted, it wasn’t supposed to be. But Jay was trying to reignite his status as god MC by masking a RD throwback (and Black Album leftovers, which I always suspected) as a concept album. His head (ll) was in it, but his p wasn’t.

Vol 1 is a weird album, a portrait of an artist not sure of his purpose or direction. Album doesn’t hold together as a whole well, but alot of those songs (Where Im, Million, Friend or Foe, Inaginary, etc…) are vital parts of Jays legend and naturally some of his best work.

I agree, some of Jay’s best work is on vol 1. I just dont understand why people look back at that album as a classics. Really the dope to wack ratio was the about the same as Nastradamas or I Am.

January 10th, 2010 at 3:48 am
The rap game is not really interested in Jay Elec. Only a few people in the blogosphere. The hip-hop intellectuals, nerds, 5 percenters, and old heads are only interested in him. The ones who don’t buy albums. He’s basically an unknown. drake, Gucci mane, have both generated more buzz than this guy.

Dr. Dre, Just Blaze, Kanye, Cool & Dre, Havoc, Timberland, and Buckwild on the boards+ the THREE biggest Co-signs in rap (ATM)… Jayceon Taylor’s entire career was manufactured for him, because real talk, you give that same production and co-signs to any nigga on the street and they going triple platinum with no problems. ^much as i hate it to say it.. rapping IS a business.. period. Yes the artform in its natural state is not about money.. but thats not what we are talking about…
kids start off playing sports and love the sport… that love eventually (if they are good enough) will support them one day.. it becomes and occupation all be it a WONDERFUL one.. its IS a business…
why hiphop fans cant understand this principle is beyond me.. aspiring artists that come into the game without that key fact in mind often times never make it.. and some dont want to… in nas’s case i think thats what it is… hes attained a moderate to great level of success money wise.. so hes good where hes at… jay on the other hand is NOT going to stay at one level.. he wants to attain a higher level of success..

Lf: I was reading the esquire article and seeing how much steve stoute is so Involved in jay power moves make me wonder if nas couldve had jay wealth if he wanted it.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
maybe not jay’s wealth ie 500 mil, but 50-75 mil mos def… thing is both are high school dropouts, yet smarter than ya average college grad…
Its obvious NaS never wanted it to seem like he was selling out to the Kool G Raps, Rakims of the game. He’s always wanted to rep for the those of that cloth and get just enough bank rolls to be a millionaire… I recall numerous interviews where NaS was saying he turned down this he turned down that.
If you never met a hustler in your life you’d know that Jay-Z epitomizes a hustle… He could care less about who think he’s sellin out or whatever the case. That man is about them checks clearing period. Imo in his mind, what the legends of the game think doesn’t hold as much weight as it does to NaS because he feels he is the greatest to ever do it.
It Was Written > Reasonable Doubt
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
BS and I would meet NaS at the airport just to carry his luggage for him for free… not even close…. IWW is slept on, its a very very good album…
RD is jus doper…beats, rhyme patterns, lyrics, wit…it has it all

“I mean to me right now, that’s Jay young boy, that’s his lil’ man. Me, honestly, I think Bleek is happy how things are right now. Because now he really gets to be Jay’s lil’ man and it’s evident, you can see it. It’s like he’s the last one who survived. He weathered the storm but the storm didn’t start with the breakup, the storm started when Beanie Sigel got signed to the Roc. He was coming of age when I came. [Laughs.] He’s still coming of age.

So this Victory mixtape was useful as a summary of Jay Elec’s work thus far, but even more interesting as a catalogue of MCs whose style he has attempted to jack over the years:
Track 3 - Biggie
Track 6 (and others) - Nas, complete with “sprrack” gun effect from Money over Bitches
Track 9 - Ghostface, via explicit topic of conversation and way of talking, eg. stuttering
Track 10 - Ghostface flow-wise
Track 11 - Prodigy
Track 12 - Consequence/Kanye
Track 13 - Posdnuos

One’s ability to quote what they saw on sports center has nothing to do with their overall knowledge of sports. But If sports center quotes a reliable fact, and someone repeats it on a blog, then you can’t presume that its just some made up quote just because it’s on sports center
Sports Center is a reliable source just as going to NFL.com is or any other sports related site. The numbers are all there. All you have to do is go to ESPN.com and check out the data, which sports center gets its facts from.
Being the number 1 rated defense has nothing to do with sports center. It has to do with how stats are compiled to make a number 1 defense. Sportscenter is just an extension and an imagery of stats brought to tv.
