^of course. and people don’t understand that !
rakim is still lyrically relevant cuz it’s the master
but in term of commercial appeal and business entreprenorial mastermind
he doesnt have the technique. he doesnt sweat the technik
jayz’s carreer’s beggining was the perfect time for him. 90′s ERA was the most prolific… for the hiphop. 80′s was just old school classicism, not a real lucrative market like now. now even ace hood gets some money
without commercial success, back then if you wasnt good, u was done!
and plus without rakim’s flow, ain’t no jigga man probably btw

I’m taking this music course online for my college as an elective and one of my assignment Q’s is
Name the break-through song that propelled rap music onto a wider (international) scene. What do you think was the message of the song (cite lyrics to support your claims)?
and i think the answer is The song “Rappers Delight” by Sugar Hill Gang propelled rap music onto a wider international scene.
anyone else have any opinion?

definitely “Rappers Delight” (sugarhill gang) in 1979… even though King Tim the 3rd came out first… King Tim III was a funk song by the Fatback Band that had a rap verse over the instrumental break … but Rappers Delight was the 1st national rap record by rappers exclusively …
then “The Message” by grandmasterflash and the furious 5, took it to a whole nother level …
November 21st, 2009 at 2:07 pm
Rapper’s Delight by SugarHill Gang 79′s

…fluidity
biggie tupac master p dr dre
What’s My Name – Snoop Dogg 90′s
nas jay big l and big pun etc
fluidity…
Eminem Slim Shady – My Name Is
( transition from 99′ to 00′s, golden era to mainstream era)
In Da Club’s Fiddy Cent 00′s
NOW, Who’s next on the 10′s ?
from commercial era to mainstream ringtone single era …

i know… thats why i said “Rappers Delight”in my initial response … and thats inarguable fact… i was just namimg groups that had bigger rap hits than “Rapture” at that time …
and “Walk This Way” did more to propel rap into a wider market than “Rapture” did …

I wonder if that’s one of the reasons why Dwight York left the industry. Unbeknown to many, he penned MADD songs back in the day (ex. Harold Melvin’s “Wake Up Everybody” was actually a subliminal message about waking up the Third Eye, also penned by York) and that’s how he was able to fund Egypt of the West in Eatonton, GA. He knew that music (tones, vibrations, and rhythms) was the way to tap into our inner-being and essentially why “they” wanted sign all of our talents.
I also found out the same day that Tatiyana Ali’s cousin (a female) is in Right Knowledge and so is Musiq Soulchild. He told Musiq years ago to not put it out there that he was a nuwaupian because it would hinder success/progress but reiterated him to stay in tune.

it may sound weird… but when the deaths of everyone from Jimi Hendrix to William Cooper to B.I.G. to JFK to Tupac are all revolving around the same explanations, it would be even more nonsensical to ignore clear signs and events …

4 tracks in with this MOTM and I’m still indifferent about it. I think had he not signed to Kanye and been pushed as a “rapper” I might’ve viewed his music differently. Real rap, this is the type of sound (Black alternative) they’re trying to push into the mainstream. Had he been prepared to follow “protocol” he probably would’ve sold plenty.

^Word. I met/know them personally and even used to sling merch for ‘em at a few of their shows (sidenote: if anybody went to their first NYC show at the Canal Room with the blurred porn playin’ in the background, I was the ninja at the table by the door in the orange Polo sellin’ their cd’s). I remember when I first heard their first joint and thinkin’ how “No More” should’ve been on the radio, had a video, and all the proper promotion. Rihanna, Keri Hilson, Santogold, and a few others are carbon copies of shorty.
And Brooke is NASTY with the beats and should be producing for others as well. I don’t know why the fuck he’s just sittin’ on all that material if he’s not gonna use it to propel himself to the next level.
But they’re from Floss Scandalous, so that’s a job in itself to keep them on point.
