During this time, Jay-Z ascended to the Presidency of Def Jam Records, causing former business partners Damon Dash and Kareem “Biggs” Burke to split off and form the Dame Dash Music Group. Sigel’s B. Coming was released on DDMG and Def Jam rather than Roc-A-Fella, but contained production from a slew of Roc/Jay-Z-affiliated producers including Chad West, The Neptunes, Just Blaze, Boola and Buckwild.

Between the lines of gangsta’s rap sheet
Who is the real Beanie Sigel?
By Dan DeLuca and Alfred Lubrano
Inquirer Staff Writers
Stripped of his attitude and entourage, Beanie Sigel sat, head down and hands shackled, in the fluorescent glare of a crammed Philadelphia courtroom last week.
In the hip-hop world, Sigel is a South Philly rapper of unquestioned skill who has established himself in a few short years as a formidable artist and businessman.
But these days, troubles are closing in on Sigel.
“He has terrorized Philadelphia,” charged Assistant U.S. Attorney Curtis Douglas, who listed the 29-year-old’s alleged drug-dealing and assault crimes with oratorical indignation.
“You don’t know him!” a cousin shouted, before Sigel’s grandmother cried and his mother collapsed.Police say that they do, and that Sigel’s gangsta persona is all too real. Accused of attempted murder, Sigel also faces a separate federal firearms charge.
Family members say you can’t believe the rhymes and the rap sheet. They talk about Sigel as a role model – a deep-down teddy bear who’s not the terror the authorities say he is.
Is Sigel a cold-eyed chronicler of life on the street, or the thuggish hero of his brutal narratives?
“Freud said we all have ego and alter ego,” said Sigel’s cousin Rita Monroe. “There’s good in the worst of us and bad in the best.”
