I used to think this dude was the future. My favorite up and coming rapper by a mile. Now I see him spouting ish about “The White Man Is The Devil”, and then tempering that statement with wishy-washyness. If you gonna take that stand, take it. As a white person (gasp), I will respect you the same way that I respect Chuck D and Ice Cube–because I know that they don’t mean all white people, but they’re focused on the historical power structure. I respect those dudes because they were brave and took a stand on issues. They didn’t downplay it with a bunch of coy “I’m just playing, well not really, err…”

This cat Jay Electronica, I thought he was smarter and better than that. I think he really is like a magician, fooling us all that he has some “secret knowledge” or whatever. But the more I see him, he’s just like your typical pseudo-intellectual college student. Oh, he likes MOVIES, does he? WOW, Eternal Sunshine, that’s a REAL OBSCURE movie, Jay. Is that supposed to be the movie that the “really smart people” like? I’m not hatin; I actually like all the references Jay Electronica makes to Nikola Tesla and all that. But the thing is, I get the impression that his knowledge of these subjects isn’t all that deep. He’s just your typical dude who wants to trick you (and himself) into thinking that he’s way smarter than he actually is.

I’ll still check his music, but personally I think his ego is getting in the way of his songs lately. I think people have gassed him up too much and he is on the verge of really thinking he’s some quasi-religious figure. He entered as a wiseman and will leave the stage as a fool in everyone’s eyes but his own unless he starts gettin a little more humble. The “I’m real mysterious and real real real knowledgeable”-act has gotten old.

But what do I know. I’m just another Devil who’s trying to hate, right, because I’m pointin out that this guy isn’t all the prophets combined like he pretends to be. There are real smart teachers out there–of many races, of many areas of expertise–this dude is not one of them. Hopefully he can still make good songs even though he thinks he is perhaps the 100% the coolest, wisest, most interesting person in history.

you may be reading a little too deep into “the white man is the devil and he will tell a lie on you… I’m just joking… well kindasorta.” This is called having a sense of humour…
