Walking back from a shooting in Harlem, we bumped into Stretch Armstrong, right in front of WCKR (!)
That’s the station where he started -in 1990- what would later become the “Stretch and Bobbito Show”, which many consider the best show ever.
The guy NORE used to call “the albino ostrige” recalls a number of great moments and a greater number of (then) unsigned rappers who blazed the show : cats like Jay-Z, Eminem, Big Pun, ODB, Big L, Biggie, and also a 16 y.o kid in shorts named Nasir…

Beanie Sigel Shot in Arm, During Robbery Attempt, Leaves Hospital

Beanie Sigel, the popular rapper who has been shadowed by his violent past, was wounded by gunfire during an attempted robbery early Thursday. The holdup was attempted around 7 a.m. by five males traveling in two cars, but there was some confusion about where the shooting took place, police said.
Sigel’s attorney, Fortunato Perri Jr., said the shooting appeared to be “a random act of violence.”
The 32-year-old rapper spent a few hours at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania before leaving around 11:40 a.m. Thursday in a wheelchair, wearing a hospital gown, blue jeans and a blanket over his head. He also had a bloodstained towel on his right shoulder.
After getting into a black Mercedes, Sigel lowered the car window and said, “I got shot. I’m cool.”
Moments later, he pulled his hospital gown aside and showed a bandage on his left shoulder to reporters. His left arm was in a sling and his left hand was bloody, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported on its Web site.

Was Beanie Sigel the Target of a Hit?
The rapper’s recent shooting smells like a warning.
When Beanie Sigel got shot in late May, word spread quickly that he was cooperating with the cops. Two cars had cornered him in the early morning near 22nd and McClellan streets, he said. Four guys had emerged with guns. They took his cash and jewelry, and then started firing at him as he hot-footed it back to his car.
The story didn’t seem like it would pass the smell test, but on May 27 the Daily News reported that police were saying the rapper’s story “checks out.” But last week Police Capt. Joseph O’Brien didn’t put it that way. “We can’t show that it was a robbery,” said O’Brien, whose South Detectives division is overseeing the case. “We have our concerns.”
The concern, of course, is whether Philly’s Biggie-sized rapper is telling the truth. “He’s cooperating in the sense that he’s giving us information,” says O’Brien. “Whether that information is accurate remains to be seen.”
O’Brien says Sigel gave various accounts of where he was at the time of the shooting, all of which put him in the same general area. But the police received no reports of gunfire in the vicinity before 7 a.m., when the rapper said he was busy being shot. They looked for shooting reports in other areas, and again found none.
O’Brien says the police also can’t prove Sigel wasn’t robbed, and that the investigation is “ongoing.”
That’s the official word. But on the street, in drug circles and among city cops with a knowledge of Sigel’s past, the rapper wasn’t the victim of a robbery at all.
He was the recipient of a warning.
Two carloads of guys with guns roll up on Beanie Sigel and corner him on the street like James Caan’s “Sonny” in The Godfather? Right.
Rent the movie and see: None of those guys checked Sonny’s pockets after they unloaded countless rounds into his chest and stomach.
What seems more likely is that Sigel—who’s allegedly the subject of a federal drug-trafficking investigation—needs to get out of whatever he’s been doing.
“He’s been tied into homicide investigations before,” says one homicide cop. “But no one could ever charge him with anything.”
According to this cop and an undercover narcotics investigator, the guys who put a bullet through Sigel’s arm either represent a rival drug organization he’s been fighting with over territory or the ghosts of drug wars past.
Around 2000 Sigel was rolling with guys from the 23rd and Tasker crew, against a group that operated in the area of 16th and Annin in South Philly. The deaths of Kevin Jackson, Ricky Stevenson, Ray Nina and Edmund Thomas—names that loomed large in the street—were all tied to that ongoing battle.
Sigel’s then-blooming music career provided the backdrop for the gang rivalry. Sigel’s first disc The Truth was released in February 2000.
“This was a hit,” says one former drug dealer. “Whatever he’s involved in right now, they’re telling him he’s got to get out. This was just to show him he can be touched. ‘Cause next time—that’s it.”
Beanie Sigel didn’t return calls for comment.
To compound the music star’s troubles, PW has also learned that Sigel has received a second federal grand jury subpoena to testify in an ongoing investigation of alleged drug dealer Alton Coles, who was indicted in March.
“If law enforcement had a scintilla of evidence against my client,” says the rapper’s attorney Fred Perri, “they’d charge him with a crime.”
