sure there are artists who are regurgitating and re-packaging old shit. but the vast majority of artists are creating new sounds all the time. TV and radio propagate stale art but those mediums are hardly representative of what is happening in the real world

are u talking about creativity or innovation? i mean life itself is creative. every new song u hear is a creation. i think most people dont care about the history of music and even more dont wish to be challenged by the music they listen to and so a lot of whats popular is not particularly innovative. but its still creative.

Its one thing if you sound like Jay. You can’t help that, but the fact that this nigga’s entire rap style is patterned after Jay, that I can respect.
Its like the same with Shyne. On first listen, Shyne sounds like BIG, but his style is completely different. So once you get that much, you can hear the subtle differences in pitch and reflection in his voice, making it his own. NOE, just sounds straight up like Jay, his ad libs, everything.

^^
Hmmm. I would say yes in the sense that, the thoughts in your head are what affect your daily actions, not the other way around. Depending on how strong those thoughts are, they could easily dictate how the course your life takes. Also, its not easy to break out of one’s own mind sometimes. That factor is what allows depression to take root. That specific example would definetly be mental imprisonment.
With that said, when we say “imagination”, do we mean, all thoughts, or just the fantastic (fantasy based) ones?

I can’t fully co-sign the whole creativity is dead shpeel, though I understand the statement. I think technology is partly to blame too.. ni99as emailing tracks back n forth takes aways from the creative process. Plus the machine only wants to churn out music that they believe = cha ching. Artists are not taking too many risks with the subject matter and the one well equipped to do so shun it.

As limitless as the mind is potentially, it can trap one also if you’re not careful. I’m sure you’ve heard the cliche “he was a prisoner of his own thoughts”.
Now strictyly fanstasy based? No. If you’re trapped by that imagination, you’re either mentally ill, or a 7 year old child, word to Where the Wild Things Are.

but i’m sayin, if u gon come out saying something as broad as “creativity is dead” some specifics are warranted, no? but even if he meant to say that “innovation is hip hop is dead” it would still be a ridiculous statement because hip hop has changed and grown tremendously. we cant see the forest through the trees cos we’re all hip hop junkies but we’re miles away from where we were in, say 2000.
now, what is dead in some respects, is a diversity of artistic viewpoints in hip hop. gangster rap still takes up way too much space in the genre. way too many tough guys.

Exactly, ni99as spend more time twittering about their personal lives or that of other rappers that it makes it all too gimmicky. I can understand critiquing the art or work of another artist but getting in2 takinfg baby mommas shopping and shit is not whats up! The element of realism in hiphop that leads to a lot of fakery. Ni99as just wanna do shit to say they did it.

but, ok.
u even named a couple rappers. Ye and Cudi…those two are of some of the most popular right now and definitely innovative. Wayne is frankly the hottest emcee alive and he’s wild innovative. like it or not, C3 was some next level shit
Jigga tries hard as hell to be innovative and people consider him to be so i guess that counts. and the key to Gucci’s fame is what he does on the mic, obviously not his content, but his sound, his skills as an orator are definitely fresh.
niggas is doin new things and they gettin love for it.

^its the same percentage of creative cats as ever was is just you forget the wack niggas and only remember the hot shit so it always seems that yesteryear had better artists. but the people who make quality records are always about 5% – 15% of the everybody making records. that said, i think the seventies was actually the greatest era in music.
