^^Word..no time in history has the music not correlate directly with what the people were feeling in the streets, we had “My president is black” which was an ode to dope dealing, cars and some other bullshit..but there’s no song(artist) out there right now to simulate the feelings of the average American and the economic difficulties facing them.

But as raps cornerstone was boasting and bragging, or putting on a poker face to remain defiant in the face of adversity; I can see how how difficult it might be to speak on economic times.
That didnt stop Melle mel from making the jewel “The Message”. I think its fair enough to say that the balance of politics in music is a lost.

As rappers continually continue to drop and sell 4,500 first week, the more they go that extra yard to sell us a dream of cars, houses and expensive jewels, it’s like they havent woken up yet, America is awake but the hip hop makers are still asleep in year 2006. Where are the “It’s so Hard” records? the “World Gon Crazy”? the “We are the worlds?”..Why are you still making “im balling outta control while I run this shit” records?

^^With a black leader, i would have imagined more “We gon make it” kind of records, with the economy I would expect more “Why” records and etc..these rappers continually sell us this image that we arent buying(soundscan). The Message did as much if not more for hip hop than battling.
If hiphop is the original voice of the ghetto ..and we are in the ghetto fucked up,.why is the music ALLL about money, cars, and living good right now?

^ partly because they understand the mentallity of the majority or youth. Sell them the dream and the will do any and everything trying to obtain. Insult them on records and they will try to make a record to insult someone else as if thats removing them from poverty. The mentallity is keeping up with the jones, eventhough the Jones are a fraud. Meanwhile a whole generation of hip hopers are being missed. The real cats trying to move forth and hold shit down, they have no voice in main stream hip hop.

I’m not saying everyone should be singing Kumbayya…but there’s not one song on the radio right now that’s detailing what the average nigga is going thru in America…rappers have lost us, and it shows in their sales.
In the past, during segregation, depression etc, music carried us, it was the voice for the people that didn’t have. Some of the best music we have sampled for hip hop use was created in the most darkest of hours.
This economic climate should be inspiring musicians to no end.

There are some rappers that are still talking about social commentary but they’re not selling….I hear people say “oh the times are hard so I wanna have fun, I wanna hear the balling song because it makes me feel happy and not depressed like other songs”……can’t really blame the rappers because there is a balance its just up to us to choose a side…..
