Jay-Z’s ‘Hottest MC’ Acceptance Speech
Jay wrote a letter to MTV News, reacting to his latest accolade of Hottest MC in the Game.
“MTV, Thanx for this nod of appreciation,” Jay wrote. “Although I don’t strive to be ‘hot’ for any particular year, I thank you for the acknowledgment. My whole goal is to be recognized as the best ever. I created the term ‘best rapper alive’ as a sign of respect to my fallen comrades (Biggie and Tupac). I believe I’ve allowed a significant grace period, and I believe I would not be respecting myself if being the absolute best was not my goal, and that’s why I continue to push myself until exhaustion … salute.
“Sidebar: Kanye moment if I may … Eminem?!?! I think you do the credibility of this list a disservice if you don’t thoroughly explain his omission,” Jay continued. “As of this second he has the highest selling rap album of the year and a scene stealing verse on the best ‘posse’ cut of the year . (*Hands mic back to Taylor Swift … and nobody was harmed, I apologize in advance.)”
(Editor’s note: Eminem’s absence from the Top 10 is explained right here.)
Rick Ross, who finished at #5, said no one is more deserving of the top spot than Jay.
“I most definitely agree with Jay-Z being the Hottest MC,” Ross said. “He’s affected the top five directly or indirectly. He signed Kanye West. He signed me to Def Jam. He influenced Lil Wayne and co-signed Drake. Jay most definitely has had the biggest impact on the game and the culture.”
Ross was extremely pleased with his own ranking. “It’s an honor to be in the top five,” he said. “It’s a monumental moment. I remember always watching ‘Yo! MTV Raps’ and seeing Fab Five Freddy. The Hottest MCs list carries on in the tradition of representing real hip-hop. I think the list was great. Everybody on there is real competitive. It’s always great to get recognized for your accomplishments. Each year, I sit down and watch the debates and the rankings. MTV is really on point.”
On Sunday, Drake said being #3 was an extreme honor. “I’m at such an early stage in my career,” Drizzy said via phone. “I’m still learning from all these MCs that are on the list. Personally, I’m honored to be anywhere. There’s no number where I think I should be. I’m not gonna sit here and be like ‘3!’ It’s just an honor for MTV to even bring up my name. That’s crazy. That’s really crazy, man. That’s something to celebrate. We gotta celebrate tonight. I don’t mind being #3.”

Once again MTV didn’t have a valid point about Em being on the list. Not everybody on the list was dropping mixtapes everyweek and not everyone filled the criteria they gave for getting on the list. But I could care less cuz I know MTV can’t dictate (no no no) to me what’s hot cuz that channel fell off years ago

MTV should just dead this Hottest MCs list cuz
#1 the criteria is vague and jaded
#2 the one of the “hottest MCs” in the game could be on the list for things other than music
and
#3 the list is ALLWAYS wrong from who was on their who shouldnt have been or to who was ranked where
just do the “BEST MCs” in the game…that way we can just argue about the order

so why don’t the blogs/independant hip-hop websites do one, the only reason it got so much coverage (to me anyway) was because everyone blogged about MTVs Hottest MC’s list. Not saying its wrong, but if you dont like MTV’s credibility in rap, then other sources should do their own, I’m sure the NMC are pretty well respected within the industry for people to take notice combined with TSS and maybe All Hip-Hop?

>>Rea drops 1 ok album and he’s on the list?? OJ da Juiceman was more relevant than Rea from the Summer of 08 til the Summer of 09.
well, Rae was hot, but I don’t know that he was Top 10 hot, only because I don’t think the rest of the country cared as much as the East Coast did. but he was certainly hotter than OJ because any hotness OJ had was residual Gucci hotness and even that I think was restricted to Atlanta.
that said, if you call me esgay one more time I’m gonna reverse lookup your IP address and come rape your mother.

>>but foreal MTV doesnt know rap
this is a stupid statement because the list really isn’t that far off. plus, I guarantee you that Shaheem and Rahman know more about Hip-Hop, or at least as much about Hip-Hop than alot of you niggas.
historically, MTV played themselves with their coverage of Hip-Hop by ignoring it for too long, but I don’t think anybody can say that Yo MTV Raps wasn’t a monumental rap outlet.
just because the ignorant suits that ran the place in the 80’s made mistakes, doesn’t mean that everybody who’s there now doesn’t know what they’re talking about.
niggas think MTV and they think white guys in suits and rock snobs, but that’s not really the case anymore. Sway ran one of the most important hip-hop radio shows in the country for mad years and is respected by damn near every legendary rapper out there.

^^
This. OJs a nonfactor. Atlantic tried to replace Plies with him when they serviced Wasted to radio, but that version was so unpopular, they served it again with Plies back on it.

i never heard of that nigga until Gucci got out of jail and that song they had popped. I’m not saying he wasn’t hot in Atlanta beore that, I’m saying he wasn’t hot on a national level and he still isn’t really at that point yet.
and your mother is a sloppy whore, don’t kid yourself.

What would your list have looked like, Eskay?
October 8th, 2009 at 5:31 pm
Em >>> the rest of the list.
He was the hottest emcee at the time the list was compiled - regardless of subjectivity. At the very least he should have been on the list.
They did admit that it ultimately boiled down to the opinions of their questionable collective group of judges. The idea of fan participation baring significantly on the outcome was an illusion they perpetuated at the beginning of the contest to garner publicity for it.
Fuck them. Congrats to Hov anyway though. At least it wasn’t gucci mane.

Jay pullin a beyonce I guess, hell yah get them sales! Anyway mtv was on one with that list, all these cats over Eminem? Wow, just wow. Whether you like it or not, lyrically, flow wise, structurely, ‘We Made You’ is better than anyother commercial rap song released this year, point blank.

Lil Mama’s a dumb broad. Just felt like sayin it.
October 8th, 2009 at 10:35 pm
Jay never ceases to amaze me. He always knows what to say and how to say it. His take on what Kanye did at the VMAs was on point - it was rude, but so was Lil Mama, let’s not blow it out of proportion, it’s an awards show - and he’s completely right about this list.
Each year MTV gets it wrong somewhere in the list. They go for marketing, not validation of longevity in the game. Not to say those on the list aren’t talented and influential… but if they weren’t all over the radio right here and now some wouldn’t have made the cut. This list is more about an “at the moment hit.” If some of these MCs are as great as MTV and others predict, let them prove themselves and earn it. Not knocking some, but your not born at the top, you climb to it. Same reaction when VH1 throws the term “diva” out to Miley Cyrus and Jordan Sparks, simply for the attention of younger viewers.
October 8th, 2009 at 10:51 pm
I think that way too many people are giving this topic too much hype! Who cares what the 10 people in the Hip-Hop Brain Trust thinks? Who are these, “10 passionate, informed and opinionated people”, that I should care what THEY think is the hottest MC’s in the game? GTFOH!!!
