How did Rick Ross make it to the Hottest MC List’s top five in back-to-back years? Because this top-tier word assassin released what seven of Roundtable members consider the preeminent hip-hop release of the year, Deeper Than Rap.
Deeper ceaselessly and seamlessly did its job, entertaining throughout with Ross’ lithe lyrical delivery, which forms a mesmeric marriage with soulfully melodic tracks that play like the score to an Oscar-winning film.
“Magnificent” mixed Ross’ sophisticated thuggin’ with John Legend’s Grammy-winning starpower and vocal luster to make for one of the most heavily spun hits this year. The striking “Mafia Music” was strong enough to ignite a musical and Internet war with G-Unit. While “Maybach Music 2″ — featuring T-Pain, Kanye West and Lil’ Wayne — was one of the preeminent posse cuts of the year.
Despite all the controversy surrounding his past as a corrections officer, most of rap’s elite not only kept their embrace of Ross, but they worked with him on mixtapes as well as on his LP. The fans, for the most part, didn’t seem to care either. Deeper Than Rap sold more than 150,000 copies in its first week of release. Although those numbers didn’t quite match the quality of the work, the album did top the Billboard albums chart — a feat all three of Ross’ albums have accomplished.

1. Drake - His buzz is so undeniable now. He’s completely broken out of the hip-hop community and is a legit pop star. He could put out a complete dud and still sell 500k his first week.
2. Jay-Z - I don’t know how Jay did it, but he completely rehabilitated his image. He’s more or less taken the mantle as “the face” of hip-hop and the culture, which is incredible for a veteran artist to be the face of cool.
3. Wayne - More rabid fan base than any other major artist period.
4. Kanye - His buzz is more or less on the decline now just because he’s been in the spotlight for such a long time. His willingness to reinvent himself and keep his sound fresh is what will distinguish him and keep him on the top. What people don’t realize is that 50 didn’t stop making the type of records that were huge hits a few years ago, it’s just that the type of music he makes now is completely dated. So Seductive or Just A Lil Bit could come out now, and not register a blip on the radar. Kanye clearly has learned that lesson with 808’s and make a wholly unique album.

On another note, Fab and Raekwon should be dropped from this list. Both of their albums were complete duds on the charts (Hate to say it, but the numbers don’t lie).
How can you say an artist is hot when both of them just released albums that did so poorly that now you could seriously doubt whether a major label is going to allow them to release another album?
Rick Ross should be lower. I’m not going to say that Deeper Than Rap wasn’t an interesting album, but it’s the same damn Def Jam all-stars formula over and over again. The album gets good marks not because of him, but because it is clear that good money was spent on production and features.
Gucci should be higher. He needs to work on his image and have some quality control in the studio, but he has the potential to really break out. If he has a smash single in conjunction with an album that doesn’t cut corners, he could very well go platinum. The odds of Fab, Ross, or Raekwon going platinum — damn near 0% chance.

I’m not really a fan of either, but I am 100% damn sure that Drake has a million times more buzz and popularity than Fab. I’m not saying one is better than the other, I’m just saying that Drake is clearly in the spotlight.

I listened to both, both have sold about 200k-300k, and both have been complete sales duds. Fab went platinum in 2003, and Raekwon went platinum in freaking 1995, that was a long time ago brother.
Again, I’m not saying whos better, what I’m saying is that Gucci has this crazy following all over the country, and if he puts it all together, he has the potential to really sell some records. I’m just talking business man, so chill out.

There’s a lot of 50 cent hate on this site, my god I thought the post was about Ross being #5. Shit to the side DTR was horrible, yeah nice riding music on some tracks but listen to what he’s talking about and it’s wack. Matter of fact he had the worst verse on his own song (mayback music 2). But that is music nowadays niggas gettin’ credit…based on production. As far as the beef goes, he took a L. y’all don’t remember those horrible diss tracks he put out (like the one over the mase beat), and the fact he lied for a year about being a CO. But who cares the list lost it’s credibility a long time ago.
