Jay will never have an album as good as illmatic.
^^
Illmatic being considered the GOAT album is as much a product of the media as any other lie. Illmatic is incredible, but people forgot that when it came out, it was overshadowed by Ready To Die. Illmatic was the last classic “golden era”-esque album. Ready to Die was the first of the new era.
Cuban Linx > Illmatic
Aquemini > Illmatic
and most importantly, It Was Writen > Illmatic
It was Written is the most misunderstood album in hiphop history. Hands down. The prophet came with the word, and we stoned him…
_ _ _ _
if he’s misunderstood isn’t that the prophets fault for not delivering the message in a clear enough fashion? Isn’t that part of rapping, or speaking, or writing? Making it so others can understand you? Thus making your little > point in the wrong direction.

But really, what was Illmatic’s impact? Critics loved it, and most fans. But that sound wasnt duplicated. On the contrary, it was the LAST popular NY album to sound like that. Niggas didnt try to sound like Nas after that, not even Nas (he was on his Cuban Linx steez). I think as far as direct impact, Illmatic and Aquemini both come up short.
So let’s talk musically…(ll).

Their missions are also different- a hustler/business man versus a poet. Nas is sharper with the lyricism, but Jay’s intent was to market the best complete product while impressing you with his lyrical abilities at the same time. Jay probably spends a lot time more time focusing on beats that will appeal to the consumer than Nas. Nas probably got pushback from the label to target certain singles, but I don’t believe his focus is to appeal to mass radio or make videos. In an era of sales defining career success and his entire body of work (lyrics and beats), Jay has won hands down.

Here:
Lights is blinding, girls need blinders
Or they could step out of bounds quick, the sidelines is
Lined with casualties who sipped the life casually
Then gradually become worse, don’t bite the apple, Eve
Caught up in the in crowd, now you’re in style
And, uh, the winter gets cold, en vogue with your skin out
City of sin, it’s a pity, on a whim
Good girls gone bad? The city’s filled with them
Mami took a bus trip, now she got her bust out
Everybody ride her, just like a bus route
Hail Mary, to the city you’re a virgin
And Jesus can’t save you, life starts when the church end
Came here for school, graduated to the high life
Ball players, rap stars, addicted to the limelight
MDMA got you feelin’ like a champion
The city never sleeps, better slip you a Ambien
(Also, “Caught up in the in crowd, now you’re in style/And, uh, the winter gets cold, en vogue with your skin out” works as “Caught up in the in crowd, now you’re In Style/Anna the Wintour gets cold, in Vogue with your skin out” which is so dope.)

The Chronic has to be another pillar too.
^^
Of course. But as great as an album as The Chronic is sonically, and with the exception of Lil’Ghetto Boy, its also the point when hiphop took a turn for the worse. As I get older I see the harm done to our people with the imagery of that album. It isnt Dre’s fault completely, but it birthed (along with Niggaz For Life) the coonish/cartoon imagery that has been pervasive for far to long. I’m all about some good old fashioned ignorance, and against censorship, but there’s some shit the kids shouldnt be exposed to, and because of the Chronic, that’s ALL they’re exposed to.

Beat selection is one of the characteristics of the GOAT. And it involves more than just picking the hottest shit, its about picking the hottest shit that suits you specifically. Wow, is that Batman game really that good??
I’ll have to download the demo for my PS3 and 36O to see which one I like better, if any.
