Video: Jay-Z Talks BP3 Leak

Whether Timbaland or his camp got their email jacked, cuz it was only his songs… The whole thing is going to leak pretty soon. [Tim Kash interrupts: Actually it happened, as the press conference was going on.] …I’ve learned to look at it as a great thing.

via MTV:

It was only a matter of time. Last week a number of tracks from Jay-Z’s upcoming The Blueprint 3 leaked online, including his collaboration with Rookie of the Year Drake on “Off That.” Now, Hov has to deal with his entire album being on the Web: The Blueprint 3 popped up on blogs this morning around the time Jay-Z appeared at a press conference announcing his 9/11 tribute concert.

“I may be the most bootlegged artist in history,” he told MTV News shortly after his album leaked. “It’s a preview. I’m excited for people to hear the album. I’m very proud of the work I’ve done, so enjoy it.”

Jay kept it cool despite his material leaking out 10 days before the official release day. The iconic MC, though, had reason to relax: He has his own indicator to let him know whether reactions to his music are good or bad.

“My pager is actually ringing right now, so people are probably calling me and telling me they pretty much like it,” he explained. “I can tell by the way my pager rings if a song is good or not. It’s really going crazy right now.”

I told you I had to get in my comfort zone before rocking the new Jay album, man, before the intro was finished it hit me why I was/is a Jay stan, the growth (pause) from RD to now is beyond mind blowing, you can’t name a rapper that did the same and was popular all in the same breath, I bet my nigga cOLD is eating his words right now.

I’m still thinking to myself “how is he this nice for this long?”

This better not be his last album, I feel like the hater guy from the movie, Major league baseball 2 that was hating, but really was a fan deep inside (pause)

Duke is on some super creative stuff….I like some of his work, but some of his work is too left for me…like I hate listening to a song and thinking to myself, what the hell was that? I saw dude perform down in Austin for SXSW, the show was dope, but as of now, I can’t call myself a major fan.

Potential is cool but not enough. Fab has had potential to be that dude his entire career and niggas is still saying he has potential. Anyway, hopefully Cudi can make me a fan.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Nearly a third of all cocaine seized in the United States is laced with a dangerous veterinary medicine – a livestock de-worming drug that might enhance cocaine’s effects but has been blamed in at least three deaths and scores of serious illnesses.

The medication called levamisole has killed at least three people in the U.S. and Canada and sickened more than 100 others. It can be used in humans to treat colorectal cancer, but it severely weakens the body’s immune system, leaving patients vulnerable to fatal infections.

I have the leaked BP3. I will buy the hard copy. It’s a classic. It may be his best whole body of work. I’ve listened 4 times and still think this. Hov, as a person and artist has grown to be a greater than anyone could have predicted. Great job Jigga. Since when did people bettering themselves become a taboo thing? If becoming better at your job, in relationships and just as people aren’t common goals for you then…. you should not listen to Jay-Z and a whole slew of Hip-Hoppers that deliver truth, growth and real emotion. I think that most times the loudest voice is the most ignorant and not to be taken with any seriousness. Buy your favorite music so that they can get paid to make more. If we all steal and never support the artists then eventually there will be nothing to steal… Already! Done.

Here’s the question ,Will it be a classic?

  50. DC Says:

Personally, I like it. I don’t love it. I think RD, BP1, Black Album, and even American Gangster were deeper sonically and lyrically. That said, what’s the point of a Jay-z album? If it’s to re-invent hip-hop and blow my mind, then this did not succeed. If it’s to entertain me and offer new thoughts and evoke emotions, then it succeeded. I absolutely loved the Forever Young track. Already home was nice, too.

blueprint 3 is fukin great i like it better then da black album n i love da black album….09 bout to b 2010 n dis nigga puts out dis kinda music still is sick..ya hear da star is born track da sht he was sayin? wow

  55. Dashing Says:

The album is by no means classic, but it’s very solid. Better than RD, BP1, Black Album or American Gangster? Probably not. But it’sstill a great album. In some ways, it’s his most ambitious album creatively. It’s clear that at this stage in his career Hov is not trying to re-make his old albums and the sound of this new Blueprint is a perfect example of it. Here’s my track-by-track breakdown (minus the singles):

“What We Talkin About” Great intro track. It sounds like a classic Hov track ins some respects but with some futuristic elements. Great lyrics, a bit left of center for typical hip hop. It’s a good indicator of what the album will feel like.

“Thank You” This is Jay in his comfort zone. Thematically it feels a bit like Encore, but while the undertone of Encore has Hove on his way out, this has Hov with his feet up, soaking it all in. It’s a smooth instrumental that sounds like a fusion of Dr. Dre and Pete Rock.

“Empire State of Mind”(featuring Alicia Keys) This is Jay’s ode to the Big Apple. This is a standout track. Alicia Keys blesses this track. I sincerely hope that this becomes a single and they get Spike to direct.

“Real As It Gets” (featuring Young Jeezy) This is a pretty decent cut. Jeezy does what he does best, bringing his swagger and energy to the hook, but doesn’t bring much to the table lyrically. Jay brings it for his second verse. Overall, a decent track.

“On to the Next One” (featuring Swizz Beats) It’s been a while since Jay-z and Swizzy collaborated for something great and this song falls a bit flat. This, more than anything else on the album, seems to chase a club hit, with little added creatively.

“Off That”(featuring Drake) Ah, the song that engedered so much hatred on the blgosphere. I’ll grant that the hook is terrible and the beat is not Timbo’s best, but Jay bodies the verses. Expectations may have been too high for this given the feature and Timbo’s production, but this is a decent energy track.

“A Star is Born” This sounds like Jay’s way of showing respect to the other heads that changed the game while allowing himself to pass on the torch to the new generation. J. Cole happily grabs it and murders his verse, a solid introduction for most folks, who are unfamiliar with his mixtape work.

“Venus vs. Mars” Another Timbland production that seemed to garner a lot of dislike. True, the bare production leaves a bit to be desired, but this may be the most clever club track I’ve heard in awhile. Not creative genius, but it’s good for what it is.

“Already Home” (featuring Kid Cudi) The track sounds more like vintage Kanye than any of his other production. Kid Cudi lends his vocals to the hook and Jay does his thing. Very solid track.

“Hate” This one took a few listens to grow on me cause the flows are downright silly (not in a dope way), but now this damn thing is stuck in my head. This would be better as a Kanye track because he can better get away with being this goofy. Even though Jay still has some great lines here, it’s not his best. Thankfully, it’s short.

“Reminder” Another Timbaland track, this time it’s his turn to do his Dre impersonation. This song is decent but not the caliber I expect from Jay at this point in his career. The hook is also not great. (Is that Auto Tune I hear?)

“So Ambitious” (featuring Pharrell) The Neptunes bring Jay a solid track. Nothing toppng The Black Album’s “Allure” but a decent song nonetheless/

“Young Forever” (feat Mr. Hudson) Ye samples the 80s version of “Forever Young” with Mr. Hudson re-singing the hook. Jay discusses how he will be young forever as long as his music is still being played. Great thematically. Ye could have added more to the production though. Solid song though.

Overall, this album gets a 8 out of 10. Jay gets points for trying something different creatively and thankfully, most of the time, it works. No doubt there will be a lot of poeple that want to hear Jay sound like “Black Album” or “Blueprint” every time out, but it’s clear he’s moving beyond that. It’s a testament to his ability that he gets compared only to his previous classics. And while this is no classic, it’s his most ambitous album to date.
