Memphis Bleek – Run This Town Freestyle
Let’s just get one thing clear here: Memphis Bleek did not leave Roc-A-Fella Records. I don’t care how he’s trying to spin the whole situation, and I know that he had been working on this Get Low Records thing for a while, but let’s not act like he left the Roc or however his press release wants to word it. The fact of the matter is that there wasn’t a Roc-A-Fella to leave in the first place. I wouldn’t call it a sinking ship per se, but it wasn’t really going anywhere while Jay was focusing his energy on getting this Live Nation thing off the ground. How could he possibly justify the ridiculous amount of money they’re trying to shove in his pockets with acts that have been around forever, since Reasonable Doubt days even, and still have yet to pop. Of course, I mean no shots toward Memph, but I’m just trying to clarify all the stupid speculation that’s been going on lately. Roc Nation won’t be the utopic place where Jay can finally take these artists and make sure they can get established and get the shine they truly deserve. It’s more likely to be where Jay snatches up acts (see:superstars) like Kanye West & Rihanna (when their contractual obligations are up, obviously,) and makes himself and whoever else is betting on him filthy rich! (Instead of making Universal even more money by co-signing their talent and then seeing it go to waste, or missing a supremely good opportunity when they go on world tours, such as the Glow In The Dark tour.) Anyway, no one can really speculate about what Roc Nation will become because we have yet to really see anything. But you can be sure Jay won’t waste any more time answering questions about Memph, Beans or Dame.
Now of course, Memph and Jay might very well still be tight. He might still on occasion carry weed for him do the whole hype man thing at shows, but that whole Executive Producer title on the album is a fucking joke to me, it’s almost insulting really. Like, “nah, I’m not taking you to Roc Nation but I’ll hold your hand this one last time, Bleek.” Of course Jay has cut people off in the past, but he can’t afford to do Bleek dirty at this stage of the game, with the whole world watching and ready to throw his own lines from “Diamonds from Sierra Leone” back at him. Malik should just do the right thing and seriously stop kidding himself, and get his shit together like Freeway is doing or like Beans might have the potential to do. I feel like I’m the only one who’s going to say anything on the subject even though there’s a lot of people who think it.There are certainly people who still bother mentioning this shit, but they’re just being disrespectful to the artists or making a joke out of everything that’s happened up ’til now. It’s a shame to see every effort go to waste after all this time, especially since what these guys did for the game means the world to anyone that’s ever been a Roc-a-Fella fan. Anyone who is still paying attention at this point is doing so because they really believe they can do it again. Let’s just wait to see where the chips will fall… for Young Chris.

Note: Just because this album isn’t coming out on Roc Nation, doesn’t mean that Jay-Z doesn’t intend on signing him. Hey, it could happen. Nah right?

I read the press release, but I’m really not sure what you’re tryin to get across in the second paragraph. How’s Bleek kidding himself, by making Jay the exec producer on the new project?

^I know you’re speaking from a standom POV, but let me put it to you like this: before DTR, I could really give 2 shits about a Rawse album. Like, I knew the dude had bars but I never even downloaded any material of his before DTR. When the tracks for DTR started leaking daily and posted on NR, I was ANTICIPATING the full album. Money MADE me a fan. Essentially, he and Rae are selling the same product which is slick/fly talk mixed in with the coke raps. But in 2009… and you will probably disagree… but nobody is doing that lane of music better than Big Bawse Man.
*serious face*

Ok… with the exception of the Clipse, of course… to add on to my Rawse/Chef comparison. But they’re a duo so I purposely eliminated ‘em from the convo.

I’m digging the Rae snippets. 30 seconds is really too short to make real assertions on the quality of the whole album, but so far, this sounds exactly like what I wanted to hear.

DTR is an excellent album. But barring some really horrible hooks and guest appearances, LP of the year props are Rae’s to lose based on what I’m hearing.

August 22nd, 2009 at 11:10 pm
i love when people call rappers by their first name like they cool like that. (no tide commercial)
i digress tho.
the whole Roc Nation joint is about live performances packing major venues.
the game has changed now. the music business is about the 9 billion in live shows – all controlled by ONE company. Live Nation/Clear Channel/Ticketmaster.
MAJOR venues. not your local house of blues knock offs, but your stadiums 1000+ venues WORLDWIDE summer festival tours, etc
memphis bleek couldn’t carry a megaclub with mega radio station promotion anywhere outside of new york., how the fuck he gonna join the clear channel live nation ticketmaster mafia?
August 22nd, 2009 at 11:31 pm
Bleek been going nowhere for years now and nothing will change that.
August 22nd, 2009 at 11:40 pm
Eskay you hit that on the head. I was thinking about the bars from the Diamonds are Forever remix as I read your post. I don’t see Jay signing Bleek to the label either unless somehow, Bleek generates buzz with his independent album…but that track Bleek dropped a few months/weeks back was iLL, the “No I’m For My Fam” was hot…”Lil Youngin” was aiight but not really something that is going to move an artist of his stature any further in the game.
But really though, I don’t see Bleek doing too much commercially at this point, UNLESS, of course, he gets DRAKE ON THE HOOK!!! Lol.
August 23rd, 2009 at 12:18 am
Yea Roc-a-fella is dead. Roc Nation is the new shit now. But like sleep said you can’t question that Jay and Bleek are still cool. I think Bleek appreciates but at the same time is embarssed by those lines from Diamonds and he’s really tryna branch out on his own. But Jay exec producing…not a joke at all, he’s still holding down his boy that always rode with him all these years and he’ll prolly produce the next album too. (I even read on Vibe before they shut down that Jay helped Bleek secure his new deal and that Get Low might actually be under the Roc Nation umbrella) But the fact that Roc Nation won’t be the utopic place where good spitters like Beans and Free will finally pop is the truth. Sad but true. Altho the wishful Roc fan in me still says a well-executed Dynasty 2 album could put Unc Murda, Beans and the rest back on the map. Can’t we hope??

” Bleek can be one hit away his whole career, as long as i’m alive he’s a millionaire. And even if I die he’s in my will somewhere so he can just kick back and chill somwhere”
Bleek probably think that people will cop his CD ,if he has The almighty Hova as the Executive Producer
August 23rd, 2009 at 3:00 am
Oh and I think it’s time for Kanye to leave Roc-a-fella Records. Jay is taking to much of his money. It doesn’t matter how much money Kanye makes, Jay will always make more because he’s on Roc-A-Fella .Jay needs Kanye more that Kanye needs Jay.
I want to see Kanye on the no 1 spot at the Hip Hop Cash King list
