    anybody catch that Marion Barry documentary on HBO this week? I knew about the hotel crack raid, but I didn’t know that it was an open secret that ol’ boy was strung out, while in office…it was interesting to me that Barry had activist/militant roots, and ended up getting strung out on drugs- Huey Newton, Bobby Seale anyone? Young Marion Barry was definitely an interesting character- a militant, young activist who spoke his mind, going against the established power structure….when I met ol’ boy on a school awards assembly back in the day, right before he got arrested, he was basically a dick (none)

    ***pretty good- it intersplices the narrative/video/commentary from his rise and fall from power, with his 2004 run for city council…I think HBO has it on demand, by now, but it debuted last Sunday…Barry was such a political outsider, and longshot for mayor, that it wasn’t even funny..he got into office by challenging the status quo- rich lightskinned niggas and crackers who ran the city, and appealing to the black majority (70%), most of whom lived in poverty, hidden far behind the shadows of the city’s monuments…
