As dope as It was written was, it had too many flaws, inconsistent. That nigga did a 360. No stannery, but RD was kinda flawless from front to back. Every beat was perfect except for cashmere thoughts.

Not really tho. Illmatic is essentially Nas’ observations between childhood and his early 20s. To me, It Was Written was always a creative excercise, a fantasy of Nas’ life if the kid from Illmatic became a drug kingpin instead of rapper. The whole album is a fractured narrative in the spirit of Pulp Fiction, but most niggas are so against the “mafiso” shit, they miss that.

Jay’s insecurity and revisionist history has turned a really good album into a classic over time. If Nas was as self-mythologizing and whiny as Jay, he’d be sitting on 6 classics.

They also maintained that Cube had the run with no breaks of any rapper. Jay’s close, but Cube trumps him I think. From 1989 to 1993 he was the illest. Hands down.

I think that it is interesting that b-ease threw Aquemini in that list. Not because of its status, but when you compare it to RD & illmatic you have to consider that it was Kast’s 3rd LP as opposed to Jay & Nas’ 1st.

What do you think makes for a better album (throughout history, not just here), doing great with the first or reaching that potential later? how about for careers?

I think a lot of people would argue that both Nas & Jay never will be able to top the first.

From RD to 09 jay-z always managed to stay relevant to the times and make tracks that he knew ppl would feel. Music aside, his marketing approach is real. Nas never had the ability to be a great “artist.” Just a good rapper. Jay-z moved from that jigg shit, to the gangsta shit wit la familia, then comfortably settled into GOAT mode on blueprint. Nas never had any kind of style evolution. Rappping, gotta give the title to Nas, as an ARTIST, Jay takes it easy

Face never put out an album that was as groundbreaking and ill as Amerikkk or Death certificate. Diary was ill, but neither that or the fix can hold a candle to Cubes 2nd and 3rd lp. It just can’t.

& I think it’s more impressive if the later albums are classics. because you have your whole life to write your debut, but only a year or so to make most of the follow ups. In Hip Hop at least.

I think I am biased toward Cube though since I lived in CA during his hey days & my cousin stayed playin his albums. But I know Face is that nigga too & I respect him more now than ever since I moved to TX.
