Lushlife feat. Elzhi – In Soft Focus

Thursday, June 25th, 2009

Above is Lushlife going in on the MPC. Below is his track with Elzhi.

Figuring out what the boy Lushlife is all about isn’t a piece of cake. With a look more Vice Magazine than The Source, a production style that sounds like DJ Premier chopping up Brian Wilson and Burt Bacharach, and a flow to make you think there’s a VERY worn copy of Illmatic in his past somewhere, the Philly emcee/producere isn’t easy to pin down. But that’s part of the fun, isn’t it? A perfect example of these intersecting aesthetics, “In Soft Focus” takes a pastel-colored golden-era-influenced beat with a sample taken from lo-fi indie rock champ Ariel Pink and fuses it with Lush’s own flow, and then goes for the win with a verse from rising star and Slum Village member Elzhi. Sound too ambitious to work? Not on your life.

There was a promo that leaked a while back, but it didn’t include this:

Ankh Marketing is doing a great job of getting some very dope talent to the Bay and I for one appreciate it. Check out my shots from the show which was ok I guess. It was really packed and very hot which always makes filming tough. Below you will find his entire set from the show.

Video: DJ Premier Interview w/ DJ SAV*ONE

Thursday, June 25th, 2009

I had the pleasure of interviewing DJ Premier at Fat Beats NY & we discussed a lot about vinyl and how important record shops like Fat Beats are in the underground hip-hop community. We discussed new albums from Blaq Poet (Blaqprint), Eternia & MoSS (At Last), NYGz & Royce Da 5’9 – all of which he gave amazing reviews! He’s got his hand in a lot of upcoming projects, including other joints with Rage, MC Eight, KRS-One & more. We spoke a little about the situation with 50 Cent over his “Shut Your Bloodclot Mouth” track & he also talks about the tattoo visible in the attached picture and what goals he had when he entered the hip-hop industry. I asked him about his consistency in the game and how valuable that has been , while we also talked about his 2 Rare Play CDs, as well as his 2 “Beats That Collected Dust” projects. It’s a good interview, considering I didn’t have much time to conduct it lol. Much respect to DJ Premier, my favorite producer of ALL TIME. Click below for even more dope content & find out why DJ Premier cosigned Eternia & MoSS in this interview.

Cookin Soul feat. Tek, Stat Quo, Ali Vegas, Mic Geronimo, Big Pooh, Doo Wop, Icadon, Chirie Vegas & 40 Cal – Streets Is Gettin Hot (Remix)

1am-rising-front

I’ll let eskay tell it:

So late last year, the gentleman from Cookin Soul reached out to your boy about doing a mixtape/album/EP type of thing with all original beats and lyrics. The premise was simple: they would provide their legendary production expertise, and we would all reach out to artists we know and respect for bars. Sounds straightforward enough right? So what took so long? Well, honestly, most of the joints were done months ago, but the planets weren’t properly aligned, so we had to let it marinate.

But now, I am happy to present to you the first leak off Cookin Soul & Nah Right’s 1:00 A.M. And Rising. The title is obviously a play on the title of De La Soul’s classic debut, but that’s pretty much where the similarities end. Our project consists of 12 cuts, one to correspond with each hour on the clock. I guess you can say it’s a nod to the late night grind that has become the standard MO for so many of us midnight marauders. No subliminal shots.

The full project will drop sometime over the next two weeks or so, presented by the good folks at FLud Watches.
