MTV: Drake Signs With Lil Wayne’s Young Money
Well, the wait is over: After weeks of speculation, Drake has chosen to go with the home team and sign with Lil Wayne’s Young Money Records, according to a source close to the situation. The deal breaks down as a joint venture between Young Money and Cash Money, with Universal Republic distributing. Drake’s management was adamant that he should be viewed as an independent artist, although Universal will distribute the project.
“Today is a definitely a comfortable day for me, having my team now that’s been in place for a couple of years. It’s just a great day,” Drake said. “It’s something new, but it feels familiar.”
Drizzy is excited about having a corporate push to help with the momentum he’s gained independently.
“Independent is a funny term,” he told MTV News on the set of his video for “Best I Ever Had.” “I can go independent, but you need distribution, period. You need somebody to distribute your record and you need that army that a label has to really push the record.”
Shouts to Shaheem, Rahman & Jayson over at MTV.

doggie, stop the nonsense, with the exception of immortal technique, every other artist that’s “independent” is independent because no label will touch them. dude made an incredible buzz before singing, he got his payday, now he has the distribution that’s gonna allow him to sell out stadiums. win-win-win. dude didn’t sign away shit, matter of fact his family is probably eating incredibly well today.

I can’t wait to see how this unfolds… Ego’s are gonna be too big in the camp. This is either gonna drive a wedge between him and weezy, or make weezy get off that syrup and start banging out classic verses again.

nah, look at when jay signed kanye. kanye quietly surpassed jay but jay didn’t stunt kanye’s growth but rather promoted it so he could keep eating good. wayne knows drake might surpass him and he’s gonna promote it because it means more money for wayne. and look at jay – whenever he needs a yeezy beat, he gets it. bow. same thing – when wayne wants a drake feature, he doesn’t even have to ask. wayne took a play straight outta jay’s book. anyone could have seen this coming.

^Good point. Never looked at it that way. But being the fan that I am, I hope this shit makes weezy go harder in his verses again. He’s shown that he still got it, but I need to see it on a more consistent basis.

independent isn’t a “funny” term, it’s a clearly defined term. it’s every label that doesn’t go through the big four distributors. if you’re going through koch or fontana, you’re an indie. if you’re distributed by sony, warner, universal or emi, you have major distribution. very simple. cash money pre-universal deal was an indie label. after the distrib deal, cash money’s roster were all major label artists.
dude could have stayed indie if he wanted to. jim was able to get a major radio record on koch and move a respectable number of units. but to go multiplatinum, the only way is through the majors at this point.

^^ drake hasnt released an album yet, stan. and last i checked, drake had two dope full length mixtapes: comeback season and so far gone. i haven’t even checked the debut one yet, but i expect it wouldn’t be as good as the last two (as SFG was better than CS).

^^ Yes I know. But for So far Gone= Guess who’s back fifty’s mixtape. Then Drake debut Thank me later will be as fresh as Get rich or die tryin, then nothing. Drake is good because he’s original now but in two or three years…

not really checking for him but keep me posted on his career progress. was he not CC’d about Juvie, Mannie, etc? Curren$y is that dude and Wayne wouldnt let him loose! Mannie was a producer Baby wasnt writing dem checks like he was supposed to be doing. Wayne has no busniess sense clearly and you cant make me believe that Baby and Slims hands arent in Young Moneys pockets either.

i don’t think much of drake no hate in any way
but 1 big mixtape and hes all of a sudden the savior of hip hop?
cmon hes good and has potential but hes not gonna be anything amazing in my eyes
i also dont think its fair for all the criticism he gets, hes only 21!
i wouldnt say hes overrated just over hyped.
still this is big for young money and they signed omarion so i expect great out of them.
lil wayne really has an army there hes very smart right now

why every one trippin bout tha major deal???
nigga wanna get paid, it’s coool if u wanna be that under ground nigga
but if u want your career to be rememberd for more than a mixtape
you gotta have that distrubution, like jim jones did his thing for an indie artist, but shit asher roth out sold him with next to no promotion
beyond tha net, so if tha dude wants to sell records fa reel
and not just sum ok shit he needs that deal
