Francois shut the fuck up. If you read the story behind this song you would know that Nas gave a no name rookie a shot on the boards. Were you expecting DJ Premiere production? This was the kid’s first job. So for that I salute Nas. He can rap to a nigga beating on a kitchen table and it’ll still be doper than some niggas full length albums. The lyrics on this joint were flawless!!!! And this is one of his throw aways….it’ll never be released on any album and its of top quality. “Distant Relative” on the way!!

the thing is, if you know the ultra nate song then you’re hearing this in a different way to those who don’t. if you don’t know the normal speed version it just does like a mellow guitar sample and this wouldn’t sound out of place on the lost tapes at all. i personally love the fact he sampled it, you can sample anything in hiphop if you flip it right

So let me get this straight, your gripe is that the C-Sick used the sample to a dance song?! First off, let me say that I might have come off too harsh telling you to shut the fuck up, I guess we should be able to have an intelligent discussion about rap without getting at each other like that. That being said, I think that you would be surprised at where most Rap & Hip-Hop samples come from. When you think about DJs who collect records and “dig in the crates” so to speak, they pull records from all walks of life. I’ve heard Timbaland sample actual Indian records on his and other people’s albums, I’ve heard Dr. Dre sample french records on The Firm album, I could go on forever about where certain records come from. So although its all good to have your opinion on the quality of the beat, your argument that it’s in part lame due to the origin of the sample considering that all the greats (Premo, Dre, Pete Rock, Q-Tip, Timb…) all sample from genre. My other issue is that people fail to realize that the better the lyricist, the less intrusive the beat need be. Not saying that a hard beat isn’t important but for an MC of Nas’ calliber and depth its important to not drown him out with an over-bearing beat because his words are so strong they have to be projected. For instance, take “Hero” off of “Untitled”….I’m the biggest Nas fan I know…I loved his lyrics on that song and I love the beat by Polo Da Don BUT I didn’t love the marriage between vocals and production. I feel like that beat shouldve been used for a another topic (or another rapper) and I think the lyrics were overshadowed by how busy the track was. You don’t have to agree with that but listen again to it and maybe you’ll see where I’m coming from. Then on the other hand you have rappers (NOT MCs) like Jim Jones, Plies, Gucci, etc and those niggas NEED beats to carry them through. That’s why thats all you hear in clubs cuz thats what moves you. It all comes to there being a time and place for everything. I prefer rap that I can zone out to and rewind back in amazement cuz I can’t be in a club every single day, we spend most of our time listening to music in the car, at home, at work, at the gym so naturally I’m not in a club vibe most of the time. I can’t expect to hear “I Gave You Power” or “You’re The Man” while I’m tryna get up on a chick, but when I’m not I wanna hear “Film” over a beat like the one that it’s on.

I am not dissing the fact the the kid sampled a dance record. it is the fact that it was not flipped creatively or raw enough for my standards. I collect records and beats and samples, so yes i am definetly aware of the wide spectrum of sources that producers utilize–at least as far as genre’s go. There is no limit to what can be or should be sampled, but i fel that when cats sample materiall that is not old or old enough and more recent, it is hard to sample the shit and flip it sickly because one’s year is so familair with the original that it is hard to hear some other shit. I do agree with you that some mc’s are ill enough where they dont need a beat to help them while others who are not as nice do. Respect on that, and on the intellectual exchange. Peace!

Francois this beat was produced by a 17 year-old, give him a break. I agree with you partially.. but you have to look at it from an artistic point of view. He chooses beats on how they will fit his subject matter. Sometimes though they make it hard to listen to him. Like Ive skipped so many Nas songs because of the beat, but then I went and listened to the lyrics and my overall perception of the song changed. Thats not for every song with a weak beat though. Every artist has their share of shitty beats.
As for this song “Film”, I like it. I love it, actually. Production is on point (especially for a 17 year old), lyrics, as always, on point. Glad Nas actually did 3 verses and wasn’t lazy. I hated the chorus at first, but it grew on me after a few listens and it sounds perfect with the beat.
