Tribe…you need to smoke something, chill out and bump Donuts all the way through another time.
I don’t know how people are complaining about Jay Stay Paid and Mos/Talib on that Dilla beat…mixtape rappers have bastardized Dilla beats.
Dilla instrumentals should be on probation for at least 6 months…shit is played the fuck out.

i like ‘Jay Stay Paid’ … but ive also heard most of those beats already … and a couple of them are prolly illa j, and not dilla … cause they dont sound like Jay …
June 10th, 2009 at 11:35 am
ATCQ
e-nyce had a 4 disc JDilla beat tape that has most of his best beats on it … jay stay paid, shining, & jay loves japan all use beats from that collection … welcome 2Detroit is older, but ill as well … most of Dilla’s best work was on slum village’s first 3 lps …
–I have fantastic Vol 2 for the purpose of listening to dilla but i never got around to listening to it
@ Collin and Rex
I love waves, Ulove, stop, By and walkinonit. The rest i wasnt feeling, maybe i do need to smoke to enjoy it.
Believe in god is probably the best ive heard so far

I’m kinda concerned with the listener’s ears these days…everybody skims through everything. When cats spend the time and make “albums”, it almost goes over everybody’s heads. A lot of people can’t even “grasp the concept” (c)ty bigs of an actual album. Young cats introduction to music was napster and itunes, they need that instant gratification and want to move on to the next thing asap. A lotta times the best albums are ones that are awkward to you at first, and need to be listened to in their entirety.

I’m feeling that I”m guilty of these listening practices too…so no shots.
There’s almost too much music to check out these days. Cause truth be told, I have enough to get me by for the rest of my life. I could chill on a desert island with my 60 gigs of music for the rest of my life and be good.

You cant skim thru an album like Donuts…or a Madvillainy…The albums wont make sense like that
Donuts is meant to be listened to Front to Back…word to it looping itself perfectly at the end/start of the album

we had this discussion a couple weeks ago, and i respectfully disagree … if i dont like it at first, i most likely wont ever like it, regardless of how many times i spin it …

Yeah but Land, listening to something & not liking it, is different to skimming thru something
I think if you skim thru suttin, you aint really “Listening” at all
Its like saying you seen a movie after watching a random 10 minutes of the film

^Agreed, I hated The Blueprint first time I listened to it in a car with the windows down, looking at bitches and smoking tree. Didn’t like it till I actually paid attention to it at the crib.

–Thats how i listen to every album. Word to me waiting a couple days after i got Internal affairs so that i could get in the right mindset and not have any previous bias towards him.
Btw it was alright, dont get what the hoopla is all about

No doubt… a lotta times that’s the case. I try to take the same approach as someone who’s doing an album review, since we’re all pretty critical and throw our opinions around. Three spins of an album front to back is enough to make an accurate judgment.
I remember the first three spins of Madvillainy weren’t good to me…I kept skipping through trying to find at least one banger that stood out. Then once I just let it play through it stayed in the deck for 3 months.

i know… but i aint talking about skimming … im talking about i actually listenend in its entirety, after i got offline, to The Ecstatic last night … wifey hated it, and while i liked the beats, ive never thought mos def was anything more than a good MC… nothing great IMO …
and The Cool, ive listened to MANY times … and its gets worse with each listen… im hardly a serial skimmer, i listen on a scientific level to every aspect of music … i only admitted to chea yesterday that i skimmed Ecstatic … but when i listened fully, nothing changed … it still was “meh” to me …
June 10th, 2009 at 11:50 am
Madvillainy blew me away (NH) from the very first DOOM track, (Accordion) … and it never let up …
