i believe it was the nas cover story for rappages (the orange-hued cover) where they discussed nas coming up to def jam’s offices. he was brought up there by large pro and g rap. as i recall, bobbito told them nas sounded too much like g rap and passed. their loss, columbia’s gain.

Illmatic would have come out on Def Jam, and Jay would eventually start Rocafella under the same umbrella Nas released a classics. Maybe Jay wouldn’t have had to sample Esco’s voice.
