Video: 9th Wonder Interview w/ Soulculture TV

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

… producer 9th Wonder on his trip to London in April 2009. He talks to SoulCulture.co.uk about the art of sampling, why producers that sample are misunderstood by older generations, current work with Wale and David Banner – and why putting his face out there is so important now in an age where, often, music is seen before it’s heard.

drake

Heinz @ RappersIKnow just liberated a track from Drake’s recording sessions for his 2007 Comeback Season mixtape.

Drake was a fan of Tanya Morgan and Von was also a fan of his (everyone that knows me, knows I’m always putting on for the city and sending everyone not from the Dot songs from artists I’m down with) so I linked them together. We couldn’t get them all in the same studio in time, so the quality of the song wasn’t great when D was putting it together with 40 for the mixtape. It eventually got scrapped, and he used his verses on another beat. Ah well. This is only 1 of 3 joints i got with them. Ha! BTW this was put together with just the references (thanks to Aeon!) so we couldn’t split up Drakes verses, this ain’t no mixtape dub (ex. “I’m Goin In”) this was O-FISH-ALL. Shout out to Boi-1da on the boards!

Video: Fat Joe & Big Pun in Miami (1998)

Monday, April 27th, 2009

One of Miss Info’s friends, a promoter by the name of Godfree, uploaded this classic clip on the eve of the 11th anniversary of Pun’s Capital Punishment album release.

Godfree writes:

This show at The Temple nightclub was called “South Bronx Invades South Beach” created by DJ Khaled back in March 6, 1998. I was one of the promoters, that’s why how I manage to bring my video camera to the club at that time. On this night, the lineup featuring Big Pun, Fat Joe, Cuban Link, DJ Tony Touch & also DJ Craze (the only solo DJ in history to claim the World DMC Champion trophy 3 times consecutively.) In this clip, Fat Joe performs some classic joints like “Flow Joe”, “I Shot Ya” and my favorite “Twins Deep Cover” with Big Pun. This was before Pun’s 1st album and you can hear the crowd go crazy when he comes out.

- T.C. Islam (Afrika Bambaataa’s son) was the host & The Universal Zulu Nation were the security for the show. You will see them rocking orange shirts.
- Before DJ Khaled dropped “We The Best,” this was the first & only time I had seen Khaled doing turntables tricks in front of a crowd. Maybe it was because DJ Craze was there.. not sure.
- Tony Touch had long hair.
- DJ Khaled was on a pirate station at that time before joining 99 Jamz. The station was called Mixx 96 FM.
- Big Pun took breaks throughout the show by sitting down off-stage between songs.

Video: Clipse Talk Cam’ron Collabo: “Back By Popular Demand”

Monday, April 27th, 2009

I wish this leaked instead of ‘Kinda Like A Big Deal’.

“I think Killa is about to really, really show off,” Pusha T said. “When you hear the Clipse and Killa, it’s gonna be an amazing thing. Definitely!

“It’s entitled ‘Back by Popular Demand,’ ” he continued. “I think the title explains a lot. Cam has been away from the scene. The want for the Clipse is high. It’s just, like, ‘Back by Popular Demand’ is fitting.”

“It’s crazy, I can say that,” big brother Malice added, not wanting to divulge too much about the song.

Pharrell Williams produced the track and sings on the chorus. The Clipse and Williams are in Miami, deep in studio mode — as we talked to the brothers, Pharrell was inside making a new beat. Till the Casket Drops is tentatively due in early September but, before then, expect a ton of material in advance of the project.

“It’s about to be an onslaught of just viral footage, music … just everything leading up this album,” Pusha promised. “We’re really trying to get into the depths of the streets, get to the Net crazy — just put a whole campaign together for everything coming with this one.”
