And the last couple weeks I’ve been hearing Drake’s name and I’m like ‘I know him’. He’s big like that??? And I started to listen to like 80 of your songs. Man, congratulations. For real.
Drake: Thank you… I told you, when you were off your music thing, I wasn’t even aware of myself or my sound. I just recently figured out my lane. I wasn’t even singing I think when you heard my music. There were a lot of things missing in the whole package.
Drake also talks about how he hooked up with Wayne.
At the end Cipha tells a story about how when a DJ played “Best I Ever Had” at a fashion show, it made all the people backstage stop what they were doing. “I’m a Drake soldier. So whatever you need, let me know because I love the music.”

Yeah maybe my ears are broken but I don’t get the deal about Drake or Cudi. They sound the same and I haven’t heard anything from either that’s changed my world. That is to say I think Drake is okay but the hype makes it hard to be objective.
CH is hit or miss. I think his record deal is an experiment on what to do with the accessibility of the rap game. I was stanning for the first 4 or so mixtapes after that it was oversaturation. If he fell off and dropped twice a year a concentrated effort I’d be inclined to listen again.
My personal fav of the new new school is Blu but sometimes he disappears on his own tracks.
Right now the game is like around 01 where shiny suit/big pimpin was over and curtis came to save the day. I don’t know if any of these new guys drop a game changer like grodt but I hope they do.

that big sean tape is a banger. he missed on a couple joints (i.e. “iraq’) but for the most part it was a solid mixtape w/ some replay value. he went in on that drake instrumental and that rollin beat that was on that bigger than the mayor. had to go back and dl that finally famous tape too. i bumped that rich boy too today, just too many weed-carrier features, i was ready to skip several tracks after first verse/chorus, and nowhere near bigger than the mayor.

I honestly havent heard So Far Gone, but Untitled is one of Nas’ weakest LPs, made even moreso because the mixtape was so much doper. About halfway thru it falls apart from a musical perspective, the beats and concepts just stop gelling.

Alot of Nas’ recent work is “pseudo intellectual”, but I can’t see that argument for Illmatic. I agree that its classic status is overstated, but juvenile is not something I could label it. It’s really ten tracks of a black man that just entered adulthood reflecting on everything that made him what he is.
On the contrary, I think its one of the most “mature” hiphop albums ever.

Back to Drake, I’ve heard a couple freestlyes, EveryGirl, and You the Best. All dope, but his aping of early Kanye is something I havent seen him called out enough on. I mean, the vocal inflections/tones, and subject matter are nearly identical (with the exception of the fact that Ye had his concious side, but I havent heard enough from Drake to say that he doenst).
Basically, Drake sounds as much like Kanye as Asher sounds like Eminem. Make of that what you will.

If they call Drake out, Nas would have to get called out from his delivery he admits is adopted from Slick Rick’s delivery…Same with Jay-Z and BIGGIE and PAC giving birth to him.

Influenece and adoption is different than lifting in totality. Nas being influence by Rick and Ra is different that Drake, who is more comparable in this case to Em/Asher, BIG/Guerrilla Black.
And vocal patterns and inflections are what make an MC unique, so legally of course they’re not trademarked, but in the rules of the hiphop culture, they most certainly are.

False. Inner city brothers in the 60s and 70s were influenced by the remants of the Black Power movement and the disappointment from the post civil rights era. Which is explains Rakim, PE, and the Wu. If anything, the 90s were the era that heaped the most fake “gangsterism”. It just so happens that the Generation Y of rappers were more influenced by the ironic humor and “regular guy” aesthetic of their older siblings in Generation X, then things like Menace or the murders of Tupac and BIG.

I agree that IWW > Illmatic, but I can’t co-sign the “knows nothing about hiphop” idea.
With that said, it’s asinine to compare So Far Gone to Illmatic. The eras are so different, hell, the idea of what is hiphop is so different, that a comparison is equivalent to saying Children of Men > Casablanca. The differences in standards is too much.
If you enjoy listening to So Far Gone more than Illmatic right now, more power to you, but to say its a better piece of music is a reach no matter how you frame it.

That type of Mr. Fantastic statement is the reason cats think its cool to relegate Illmatic as less than what it was.
Illmatic was the bridge between the old-school and new school, pretty much lyrical perfection, and contains three of the dopest beats ever (NY State of Mind, World is Yours, One Love), but its not the best hiphop album of all time, not even close. IMO, its not even Nas’ best album. Not to say its not a phenomenal record, but its “classicness” has been romanticized too much.
