If this debate happened in 2006, I might have acquiesced. However, The Cool was a huge disappointment with Lupe losing whatever kinda mojo he had on F&L, maybe even sliding backwards–and Padded Room was honestly better than I thought it’d be.

Plus, you can actually understand Mr. Budden. I think Mr. Fiasco tries too hard to sound smart and goes over people’s heads. Mind you, I like intelligent rap, but not when it’s coupled with an intellectual snobbery–he almost sounded like he was looking down at people.

Lastly, I can relate to Joey. He raps for and about the everyday people. Lupe is like this abstract pharrell dude that has a lot to say about the rest of the world and whatnot, but nothing for me to go, “Yeah, this guy might have some answers.”

Padded Room > The Cool

The Cool had a very exciting concept that ultimately wasn’t followed thru, the beats were eh, and Lupe’s flow–actual flow and delivery–fell wayyyy off from F&L.

Meanwhile, Padded Room was more cohesive, had broader topics, and that last joint where Joey was talking to God was absolutely incredible. The Cool had nothing even close to that.

It actually did thought. The thing is, there are two albums on the Cool. There’s a traditional sophmore follow up LP, and a concept EP on the same disc. Which in retrospect, might not have been the best idea. He should have dropped them seperately (the EP first on some Ice Cube Kill at Will shit) but he didnt. Still a great album though.

On another note, before I went to that Alchemist joint at Mosaic last night, me and some other homies attempted to go to that new club in Odenton (right off 295). ALL of us had on jeans… we get there… niggas is in line dressed like Jamal Bryant. We was like fuck it, and got in line anyway. This old head in front of us had the burgundy suit from Cookies with the powder blue Now Later gators on. We started callin’ him Stuntin’ Like Ya Fawvuh. As the laughter ensue, old head roll up and tell us that we can’t get in. At this point it was already 11 somethin’. My thirstin’ ass homie who was drivin’ was racing to get back to his crib so that we can all split up, get our whips, go home and change, and then posse up again. First of all, I aint got SHIT in my closet for that type of function. If I gotta dress like a debutant to have a good time then fuck it, I’m not rollin’. And second, it’s not that serious. I’m not pressed to be in a packed place listening to 92Q over the air. Too old for that shit.
