Dame Dash Interview w/ Billboard

I gotta tell you, throughout all of the financial, legal and baby moms fuckery Dame has been dealing with, I always figured he’d be good in the long run, because a good woman by your side goes a long way. Needless to say, it was kinda shocking to hear that Rachel hit your boy with divorce papers earlier this month.
Dame recently sat for an interview with Billboard’s Mariel Concepcion and spoke about his co-sign of Jim Jones, 360 deals, how the recession is affecting the fashion industry and the affect that his cold war with Jay-Z has had on his career. Obviously, this was prior to Rachel serving him with those papers.
On the Jones album:
How will Jones’ album do?
I have no idea. I’m not out there like that. I’m in my house taking care of my kids. I meet Jimmy in the studio and I go to rehearsal, that’s it. But I’m not in the community like I used to be. I just know that good records sell. But I also know I don’t depend so much on record sales; I depend on the brand.
On 360 deals:
What do you think of 360 deals?
The 360 deals are smart for those who don’t have a brand set up yet. If you don’t have anything and you have someone that’s going to put $1 million or $2 million into building your brand, then they deserve a piece of it. But if you already have your following, then I wouldn’t do a 360 deal. It’s like the Cool Kids—they don’t need the record company. An artist has to look at it like this: If you can’t do it on your own, and you need the record company to do it for you, then you have to give up a piece. Get a record company only when you need it.
On the recession:
How has the recession affected your business strategy?
At this time, you have to generate a lot of things and make it within an affordable price point and you have to be better than everybody. I do see brands on every level that still do well. But everything just seems oversaturated and everyone is trying to make a buck. Everyone was trying to do the same thing, so the minute urban fashion got good, everyone had a clothing line. And the minute music got good, everyone started a label.
And finally, Dame had this to say about the aftermath of his split with Hov:
“It was like, either you are on his side or on mine,” he says. “And because of all that, there’s resistance on every level with me and the shit just bugs me out.”
Shit is sad really. I mean, he sounded crushed and frustrated, and that was before the wifey drama. What can you really say other than, hold your head Dame, you’re a smart dude, I trust you’ll weather the storm.

They don’t need a major to make records, continue touring , etc. But to get to that next level, you need the resources & exposure a major can offer you.

but at the same time, thats not Jay’s fault niggas thought they were going to eat off of his success. i feel like the fact that they had to choose between one or the other is the fucked up part. thats what i was saying about the Roc being too big. dudes were gaining notoriety off of their affiliation to the label rather than their own merit, so the prospect of successfully running by themselves was slim to none.
Jay built himself from the ground up. i wouldnt have been dumb enough to think that a dude who went the hard road in such a difficult industry was going to give me a break or let me live off of his success [no Bleek]

Dame signed Beans, Freeway, Kanye, etc. For Jay to bounce with damn newar the entire roster was tough. I dunno how Dame fucked up his relationship with Beans, but Jay turned the rest of the Roc against dude & he wasn’t nearly as instrumental in their careers as Dame. Hov could rap, but Dame had vision.
^^
There was video a while back of Beans just out the pen talking about how the whole situation was fucked up but would prolly go with Jay for career interests.Dont think they have issues

That’s after they realized Jay didn’t give a fuck about them or their careers. He never did. He only took over Roc-A-Fella to spite Dame & Biggs.
I see shades of Bitchassness.

it all comes down to, Dame wouldn’t be who he is without Jay. niggas always talking about Dame was the business genius, but really how much of genius do you have to be when you got the God M.C. fronting the label?
^ ^
From the outside looking in I think he was somewhat obsessed with living out that “Hustler’s” persona.
He had to be seen as a fly hustler at all times and at all costs. This probably meant throwing money at any venture popped into his head or came his way no matter how volatile or the likelihood of success.
He may have also put his “Hood loyalties” ahead of sound business practice as well. Signing a bunch of failed artists. Not saying they weren’t talented but if I were an exec I wouldn’t have signed any of them. [Maybe Cameron and 'em]
Idk, that’s just from my view point looking in from outside. I’m sure there’s plenty of things that contributed that we all didn’t see.

The artist themselves have said as much. Dame was constantly pushing & doing promo for the label’s artist. The most Jay did is feature on a song or two.
Jay shoulda been like, nah, go with Dame? come on b, you wouldn’t do that in that situation and you know it.
=======================================
But why sign artists when you know you don’t care about them doing well.
Look how they threw those Bleek & Young Gunz albums out there. Those shits were decent albums, but destinied to brick just based on how they were handled. Jay wasn’t pushing to sign Kanye as a rapper. I’ll admit, you can’t lose with an MC like Jay, but The Roc grew to be more then just Jay-Z & you gotta give Dame credit for that. Roc-A-Wear, Armadale, Dash Films, all ventures that Dame & Biggs brought to the table, sharing with Jay. Jay did the 40/40 deal for dolo. He’s done some shady shit.
March 24th, 2009 at 6:09 pm
Say what you want about Dame, he has helped a lot of people better their lives. A lof of artists & former employees need to ask themselves this question before they criticize Dame, “What was I doing before I met Dame?” and the answer to the large majority of cases is absolutely nothing.
I thought that Kanye’s response when on MTV a few years back was the most honest, and that was “I wish I could do what’s best for me and dame at the same time.”

Dame signed Kanye! dame fucked up by not lockin kanye down to him when he signed him. had he did that, he would’ve neva fell off. kanye makin songs about jay-z, when jay wouldn’t even give him a chance to get in the game. jay doesn’t have one friend from his past that says anything good about him. just bleek and ty-ty and dats cause they kiss his ass.
March 24th, 2009 at 7:01 pm
I read that Kanye (as an artist) was Dame’s idea. Jay thought it was a horrible idea(in terms of his “cred”). Dame was going to sign one of the Spice Girls, Jay also hated the idea. Also appointing CAM a position without Jay knowin was kinda foul. I think Jay probably took that shit personal. They were two men who started to get 2 different visions. Jay got “corporate” with his BFF. I think he did him kinda dirty but damn no one was playing “fair”. Personally, I do think Jay got some loyalty issues (outside of Bleek, NO ONE has anything good to say) We waiting for Beyonce to write that book.

Sorry to say, but Dam is not the Visionary that yall think. All he did was follow in the foot steps of Russell Simmons, and Diddy. Dame had not 1 orginal idea. Then at that, Dame got star struck. He was in the spot light to much. I am sure if Dame was on his game making sure he was finding good business deals for his artist, and not trying to be in the spot light he would still be with Jay.
Think about it, imagine if your partner fired your people and promoted some new guy while you are on vacation. Or you business partner doing deals side deals when yall are suppose to be a team. If yall have read the source back in 2003 Jay could have pushed Dame out of Roc-a-fella a long time ago, Lyor gave Jay the option and he turned it down. It was not until Dame got to Hollywood that Jay split. Then at that Dame was bought out from Roc-a-Fella and Roc-a-Wear. As the other dude said, you can find a dude with a Vision at any time, but to find real talent, that is something!
Lastly this is business, if Jay would have put his friendship before the business Jay would not have a piece of the Nets, 40/40, sold Roc-a-Wear, possible hotels, or a net worth of over 500 mill! It was a smart buisness move. Finally, Dame was not some child hood friend. He was introduced to Dame by Clark Kent when Jay was already establishing a buzz. They relationship started with Buisness, and ended with business, so what could you expect?

Actually, Rick Ross & Jeezy were already signed to the label when Jay was appointed the position at Def Jam by LA Reid. LA Reid signed Jeezy & Ross, not Hov.
I love Jay-Z’s music. He’s the best to ever do it, a top-notch lyricist and he’s made a ton of money, but the fact remains that as a record company executive Jay-Z’s track record sucks. Rihanna’s success is due to LA Reid, not Hov. Reid discovered here & got Jay to sign her. Teiarra Mari, who Jay discovered & signed, bricked. Every LP, other than Yeezy, Jeezy & Ross, released under Hov’s tenure as President bricked. How does Beanie Sigel go Gold in prison under Dame, but only sells Wood under Jay? That’s why u haven’t heard Beans say anything…that nigga is salty. Freeway bricked, Bleek bricked, Young Guns, who had the biggest chance of success, double bricked. When Dame was running the Roc all of those artists were routinely going Gold and better (only Platinum they saw was with Cam).
Hov is doing way better than Dame there is no question or doubt in that. But Hov’s ventures were always about Hov, not the team. The S.Carter shoe was brokered through Steve Stoute. If this was a team move why wasn’t it called the Rocafella shoe? The 40/40 venture was also brokered only in the interest of Hov…no thought of team building/branding there. When Dame tried to get into the .mp3 player market, he called it the Roc Box, not Dash MP3 or something. He was thinking of the team. Hov thought the idea was stupid and didnt back it, but guess what? Everyone only listens to mp3’s now!!!! Dame was about the team & building a brand. Hov was about personal and building the Jay-Z brand. Honestly, Jay split from Dame long before the public knew anything.
At the end of the day, we’re all human and we all fuck up and I’m sure that there are some regrets on both sides. Dame is hurting and going thru a tough time, but I’m sure that he’ll pull out just fine.
March 25th, 2009 at 10:19 pm
FRANKLANZKIE,
First of all you’re out of your mind if you think LA Reid or Jay “discovered” anyone. They’re execs! They make the signing decision, they’re not out there chasing after talent.
Second, how are you going to grade Hov based on who he discovered and how their sales were, and then flip and give Dame props for Beans when he DIDNT DISCOVER BEANS?? Fall back. Lets not forget, Dame didnt even want to put Yeezy’s album out (neither did Jay)! That alone should kill their music executive careers. All what artists were routinely going gold?? You make it sound like these niggaz dropped 20 albums while they were on the ROC signed to Jay and Dame. Dame gets the credit for signing Cam…BUT since you’re judging niggaz’ exec ability based on who they discovered…well obviously Dame didn’t discover Cam.
Fuck that team shit you’re talking. You think Lloyd Banks or Yayo get checks from (or got checks rather) from G-Unit clothing? Yea…when they modeled that shit maybe. 40/40 was Hov’s venture!! It wasn’t even Hov’s idea!! Them two twin niggaz that run it brought it to him and he had the capital. I hear you on the MP3 shit…but would you rock the Roc Box or an iPod? Thinking of the team is ill, but having thoughts that are actually productive are illER.
I was and still do fuck wit Dame. But that nigga popped big shit often and created a lot of animosity. Dame is a smart dude BUT those were some pretty smart people that SANK Bear Sterns, Lehman Bros, WaMu and Countrywide, etc… I hope the nigga comes back big, but don’t get at Hov for being smart about handling his business. You talk about intelligence, lets not forget the nigga ran through a purported 50 million dollars. How intelligent was this nigga not to at least pay straight cash for a vehicle? 700 dollar a month payments? Huh?
