LF : All bullshit aside, CNN’s the War Report is/was fucking epic. The guest stars werent credited on the back, so each appearance felt less like a phone in/favor, and more like the fabric of the album, which was more like a mission statement for East Coast hiphop than anything.
It goes without saying (IMO) that Mobb Deep > CNN, but at the same time,
War Report > any Mobb Deep album

I’ve been thinking on it for a minute (and by minute, I mean years), and I still cant come with something definitive.
I will say, although its longer, I can listen to Moment of Truth straight thru more readily than Aquemini. I can’t stand Synthesizer. Seriously. And the two tracks after, (the Andre-less posse cut, and the Big Boi solo from the first LP), are dope enough, but sound like filler in the midst of the other songs.
But “Spottieottiedopealicous”(sp)???, whats fucking with that? Shit was so dope, NO ONE has even attempted to do something similar, even though you know, every artist in the game loves that shit.

If you break down and grade every category by which you judge a GOAT, +BIG (to me) is the only one to have an “A” in each. Nas is an A+ writer, and storyteller, but he lacks an ultra malleble flow, and as many classic hiphop songs as he has, “If I ruled the world”, is his only joint thats gonna get play at barbeques 20 years from now.
Jay logically is the GOAT, but the thing is, his work ethic, and ear for beats are greater than his innate musical talent. After Vol.1, he pretty much abandoned storytelling, and regardless of the lava he spit, ALL his hits after HKL were handed to him by the producer. I’m not knocking (ll) Jay, I used to be a Stan, but seriously, he has more dents in his armor than most are willing to admit. AND THE BLACK ALBUM IS NOT A CLASSIC.
For real, the only person rivaling BIG in real sense is LL. Yea, I said it. Blueprint for a real solo hiphop artist (fuck that nigga, ll, Kurtis sniffed alot of Blow). Countless classics, and 15 years in (late 90s), during hiphops commercial and creative peak, he still spit verses with people that really werent even his contemporaries, and burned them up. 4,3,21, and I Shot Ya. Who else can say that? G Rap maybe? Granted, everything hes dropped this decade has been kinda wack, but come on (ll), that nigga is hip hop. All by himself.

Illmatic laid the groundwork for that album (and the Mobb’s classics), but the young hungry cats really did improve on that formula.

With that said, dude may have had the illest voice (nhjic) EVER. I mean, his mic precence was insane. On a track with Red, Meth, and Kurupt, for all the hot lines they spit, he made them sound like 16 spitting-trying-to- get-on-amatuers. While rapping pure corniness (“my lyrics motivate the planet, similar to Rhythm Nation/but thugged out/Forgive me Janet”, Jesus Christ that’s bad) he bodied 3 of the top pure spitters of all time.
Fuck lyrics, Pac is the MC, that if I was a MC, I would never want to get on a song with. Cuz getting outshined for having a weaker verse is one thing, but getting outshined because of factors out of everyone’s control has to hurt. I mean, they tried, and he didnt, but they still got ate (ll). That’s frustrating.

I understand not liking the commercial-ness. I mean, no doubt about it, LAD may be the most pop inclined “gangsta” rap album ever. But to me, thats the beauty of it. Niggas was mad (do the history) that Puff kept adding an extra sheen to the tracks (particulary Havoc’s and RZA’s), but he did the right thing. Instead of an overlong stance on morbidity, LAD became a party album, even tho the actual content doesnt really signal that. That’s the brillance of it to me.
And not to mention, even if you didnt like the production, BIG was in an incomparable zone. Unlike Ready to Die (which is classic but flawed), I cant honestly think of one wack/wasted line on LAD. Seriously. I mean, he MURDERED “Another”(from a purely lyrical/deliverly standpoint), and thats generally considered the weakest track on the album.
He told Primo after he finished “Kick in the door” that he “did it”. Meaning, I assume, that he created the perfect hiphop album. I’m inclined to agree.

See, I dig that logic. I just dont’ think it applies to Todd. Because LL’s numbers (when you add in the past 10 years) really arent that good. He’s actually sucked for a minute. But if you compare his rhyme style at the beginning, and at its peak, his number of classics, and his undeniable influence, I can’t see how you can argue his position. If anything, his longevity has hurt him. If he fell back after the GOAT album, I think alot of niggas opinions would be different.
Admittedly, I’m not big (ll) on sports, but from what I am aware of, I’d compare LL to Ken Griffey Jr.
