Queen Latifah] Artist: Rhymefest Album: El Che: The Manual Label: J Records Producer: Dub Sanata Notes: none Analysis: If this isn’t a random collaboration, I don’t know what is. Rhymefest, one of the most overlooked and underrated artists of today, and Queen Latifah, a legendary female emcee who as far as I knew was done for good with hip hop for years now (which I was apparently wrong about). But it’s all good because they managed to put together something nice here. It doesn’t sound like what I’ve come to expect from Rhymefest (big production beats and Michael Jackson samples mostly), but his lyrics feel deeper than usual, so the switch-up was probably neccesary. Latifah brings it too, sounding like she hasn’t lost a step since she was a hip hop regular. The much delayed El Che should finally see the light of day this spring, and it’ll definitely be as fun to listen to as everything ‘fest has done, but this track was still a nice departure from his usually upbeat style.
