What I think your missing ty is that when people say “so and so may drop the next illmatic”, it’s always in reference to a debut album. Illmatic is slightly overrated (just in the sense that its NOT the greatest hiphop album ever), but it set the standard for how to come in the game and make a flawless debut.

agreed and I think illmatic is OVERrated, I mean I’m not hating it’s a classic but when ever someone wants to say an album is the best or gonna be the best they always say it’s the next illmatic or some shit like that illmatic was dope but it wasn’t even Nas’s best album let alone hip-hops best album
^
Your kidding….
… nope not at all, again I think it is a classic but I don’t think it even makes my top 10 real talk …… and it was written > illmatic

Fact – Doggystyle is dope but its not even better than Liquid swords (I may be biased to this comparison because I was one of the people that slept on this album)

Personally i feel It Was Written is often hated on but its not better than Illmatic…same argument with Rd and Vol.1
December 17th, 2008 at 3:30 pm
I think some people tend to put their FAVORITE album over albums that is clearly BETTER than their favorite album.
It is okay to say I like A better than B even though B is the better album.

What I think your missing ty is that when people say “so and so may drop the next illmatic”, it’s always in reference to a debut album. Illmatic is slightly overrated (just in the sense that its NOT the greatest hiphop album ever), but it set the standard for how to come in the game and make a flawless debut.
… this is true but theres a few debuts I’d argue are > illmatic, the first that comes to mind is Food & Liquor * chris rock voice * Yeah I said it
illmatic was dope as hell at the time but how many really go back and bump it from front to back that often of albums I grew up on and go back to listen to I never get around to listening to illmatic except for a few choice cuts

kc wasn’t terrible, just the last thing anyone expected after the black album. like when mike came back with the wiz, he wasn’t terrible, just another style and still better than half the cats in the game. amer. gangsta was dope, though. the older style hov. bp3′s singles sound good.

If the first album of any artist is considered an instant classic, then how can the albums that come after that top it? It’s the chicken before the egg mentality…
December 17th, 2008 at 4:13 pm
Who said that it’s inconceivable? What people have been saying is that it’s invonceivable to put Ghost on the same level as Jay. THAT’s asinine.
I’d put Ghost up against Jay anytime, real talk. Supreme Clientele? Better than anything Jay’s put out, by far. Just because it doesn’t appeal to a wider audience because the lyrics are so abstract, doesn’t mean its not a superior album to all those named in Hov’s case. Jay could not make an album like SC, he thinks too straightforward, however Ghost can make an album with similar content to Jay’s i.e. Big Doe Rehab. Sales don’t matter cuz Jay’s more marketable. From artistic standpoint this is an easy argument. Ghost, at least pre-pretty toney album, made his albums from a lyrical/artistic standpoint. Jay post Reasonable Doubt made all his albums to move units. End of story. I respect the former way more.
BTW Liquid Swords > all the albums named thus far.
Not saying GZA is the goat, just that he has the goat album.
Peace

Im just gonna say, people dick ride jay so much. He’s nice, but most of his respect comes from hype. If Nasir had Timbaland and Pharrell and Just and Kanye throughout the early 2000′s like Jay, this wouldn’t even be an argument. But thats the difference, Nasir, Ghost, cats like that are lyricist to the bone. Jay use to be, his primary concern for the last several years though is to be a celebrity, and he makes albums accordingly. Not that there is anything wrong with pop music, I just think Jay’s career should be attributed more to his producers more than himself. They made the albums as great as they are, lyrically though he only wows me very sparingly, unlike a Nas or Ghost. I’m not saying hes bad, but he certainly is nowhere near the GOAT, lyrics wise
