that’s not necessarily what influential means… just because someone influences me doesn’t mean i wanna be like that person…
^^
Exactly. Pap, your definition seems to be who’s the most popular or well known.

but if thats what you mean by it.. yeah. Obama up there.
^^
maybe not 100%, but if someone influences you, technically there’s an aspect of his personality that you wanna emulate.
to some degree.

but if you ask a random nigga on the block “yo, what do you think about garvey’s back to africa movement”, they’re gonna give you the blankest of stares. . .
c’mon, you know by now that not everyone’s educated. . . and garvey’s the type of figure that “accidentally” slips through the high school history curriculum.
^^
Yeah, but you said INFLUENCE alie?
Without Garvey, there would be no:
Rastafarians
Rosa Parks
MLK
Huey
Bobby Seale
Panthers
Mandela
Malcolm
NOI
Farrakhan
Malachi York
Bob Marley
Red Black & Green flag

so, with that being said. . . 75% of people probably don’t know who marcus garvey and carter g. woodson are, and while tubman was important, nobody wants to be like her.
^^
That wasnt the defintion of influential I was using. I was thinking about in terms of influence in terms of how one made social change and how one changed the way we as a people see ourselves. Most people may not know who Carter G. Woodson is, but they know black history month and all that it entails. Many people may not know who Garvey is, but they know black pride and that we are African natives. I don’t think influence has to do with who wants to be like you, it’s about what you effect. And the people I listed have had more effect on America than Obama at this point.

the “most influential” means you gotta be well known.
you can’t be the most influential if only known by like 14 people.
here, lemme give you an example:
I could argue that nahright is the most influential hip hop blog b/c of it’s traffic. since it has a lot of traffic, it’s successful, so people who start hip hop blogs will take elements of nahright and try to use them to emulate it’s success.
does that make sense? i might have a case of the monday morning rambles. . .

i overstand your point, my good scholar.
but let me rephrase my idea. i think obama is top 5 b/c he’s shown that you can go against all odds and succeed in a historically racist system.
although we can’t put a number on his influence like rigz did with garvey, we can say that he’s definitely changed the course of american history. . . from the inside. [ll]

Popular and influential are not mutually exclusive, true, but they are also not attached to the hip. Master Ace isnt popular but where would Eminem (the most popular rapper) be without his influence? There was a 60′s rock group called Cream that influenced created the sound the Beatles and Hendrix would run with. But most people have never heard of them either.

LOL, but seriously her refusal to get up was an orchestrated plan by the local chapter of the NAACP. She was essentially vetted to get the position. That was organized protest, not a tired cranky woman.

Nah B-ease check your facts Cream didn’t come before the beatles/Hendrix. Clapton was in the yardbirds and Bluesbreakers before he ran off with ginger rodgers and J Bruce, took shitloads of smack/acid and became cream and they came well after the Beatles. Hendrix first album came out the year after theirs. WTF you mean people have never heard of them “white room” “sunshine of your lovefuck, CREAM was huge.
Besides who really influenced Hendrix, Clapton and the fuckin Beatles/stones were the blues artists. Robert Johnson, Wolf, Muddy Waters etc
