Everything from 2000 on has been a throwback, smh, where’s the “new ideas?” When kids in 2020 gonna wanna be “retro” & dress like niggas on 2000 on, there really gonna dress like people in 70′s/80′s, smfh. Nobody is doing anything new, everything has been a throwback.

joe88, hip-hop is based on sampling old ideas/sounds and putting them in a new context. yeah, they might not have been rocking 60′s gear in the 80s (except for the one de la video…lol) but let these kids have their fun. shit, who does it hurt? snoop was trying to relive the 70′s in the 90′s. it’s harmless.

I’m not hating on it, but when you think of this decade as a whole, what has it produced? This is the worst decade in rap yet, I know it’s only the third, but no progress has been made, nothing to look back on. Flashes of greatness, there are no elite artist that spawned from this decade, except for kanye, Jeezy, T.I, Wayne, 50 cent & a few others. This whole decade was a “get rich quick off of rap” scheme. But hey, i’m not complaining, just venting a lil.

I’m actually happier than majority of you “pure” hip hop heads, ya’ll complain about the smallest things, like why rusty shank aint got a video, but the get silly nigga does? I’m just thinking out loud (well online) cause for real, I could care less, I got instant access to any music I want, so i’m good, I don’t care if the artist I like never blow, or get a video, long as they make music.

New niggas is wack
Old niggas is wack (except nas)
rap is turning into homo village.
The only thing that can save it is a movement, a movement from baltimore, a fresh new outlook on rap, we seen what every other city has, now it’s time for baltimore to get there turn, before rap turns into a huge Y.M.C.A video on repeat
October 23rd, 2008 at 4:25 pm
i’m not co-signing joe as far as progressive music but I will say this….
think back to how much rap music changed from 1992 to 2000 (respective 8 year span going from 36 chambers to 400 Degreez) and think of the progress made from 2000 to 2008….i think it’s about to get interesting again but rap was pretty stagnant the past 8 years

I agree but this decade has spawned a few megastars….its not as good as the others decades but im also not agree costumer by any means….I mean whether you wanna believe it or not look what Kanye has done for the game. I’m glad you put 400 degreez as an endpoint. Once Jay co-signed Juve for the streets and TRL co-signed him for the burbs, the floodgates opened and all the southern shit started getting through with no filter. Since the beats were dope, these niggas werent focused as much on lyricism. Here’s where it went wrong : instead of stayin in their lane, artists from other regions (NY in particular) started to emulate this “beat flow first, lyrics afterthought” sound instead of challenging it (which would’ve made everybody doper) cause Puff created something called a player hater. I’m not saying that a dope song has to be super lyrical. But 15 years ago, CREAM was a radio hit. That would never happen today. Rant over.

But at the same time, every musical form stagnates once it has reached certain levels. I think hip hop peaked creatively in the mid-90′s and hit a commerical peak between 99-02. With a few exceptions, the same thing happened to R&B and rock in the 80′s.

Kanye would never be best hip hop producer of all time….yes he’s made some classics but son can’t make a banger….and before niggas start bumpin they gums really think about it. if you put Ye’s 10 best joints against Blaze, Rza, Large, The Hitmen, Swizz, Dre, Quik…..his joints don’t really stand up *pause*……..he’s excellent at producing full songs for his self and i’d take one of his beats anyday, but if he was strictly a producer I don’t think he could get that nod

That wasnt what I was saying. The south has produced plenty of dope artists. What I was saying is that other artists stopped trying as hard to make dope shit because they were attempting to emulate what they saw as the southern “formula”. With that said, the shit coming out of the south definetly could have used some more quality control.

I’m not saying Kanye won’t, but based on the history of classic producers, with the exception of Dre, whose career give you the impression that he will? RZA fell off, Premier fell off, Pete Rock fell off, etc. And when I say fall off, I don’t mean got wack. I just mean their output just isnt as dope as it was at their peak. Based on these dudes and others, I think it’d be safe to assume that Kanye is in the midst of that peak right now. And I don’t know if I could put him top ten greatest producers at this point.

^The west had hella niggas using there formula too when they was on top, it was niggas not from the west rapping like them, using there beats, & getting on, I remember P & UGK use to rep the west heavy cause they was getting burn over there, the emulating been going on before the south, just the people like it more when the south did it, if all these one hit wonders from the south wasn’t in high demand they wouldn’t even get a shot, someone has to like it for companies to put there money, etc into them. Joe Budden said it best, it aint just the artist fault.
October 23rd, 2008 at 4:51 pm
Kanye’s diverse beat making ability is nearly unparalleled. Dre killed that beat on Minority Report.
October 23rd, 2008 at 4:51 pm
whose career give you the impression that he will? RZA fell off, Premier fell off, Pete Rock fell off, etc.
none of the aforementioned producers were in as high demand as kanye is in his 9 year in the game and sold as many records with the exceptions of Dre. Kanye also raps, that alone can carry him.

@ Snukkah.
I can’t say with 100% certainty but I can say that with strong coviction because he has yet to prove that he can create other exceptional pieces of work outside of his own and that’s generally what a producer does. to date he has only given Common a boost with a phenomenal album in Be but that about it. I don’t think he has an ear to hear a fresh talent and work with said talent to pioneer something new. He’s a great artist, a genre defining artist but I just do not see Kanye being the best…maybe top 15
October 23rd, 2008 at 4:54 pm
the emulating been going on before the south
^^
True, it just didnt fuck up hiphop before the south.
it aint just the artist fault.
^^
I’m not blaming the southern artists. I’m blaming the labels and A&R’s that wanted everything to sound like that shit and radio stations for taking payoloa to play it. If it’s dope fine, but a lot of it wasnt it and it still got burned. Since musical genearations are short, we have a age group of kids that only know Southern shit and other regions trying to sound like southern shit. It was never like that with any other instance of emulation.

That “bitch please” beat was incredible. But, after Chronic 2001 most of Dre’s beats sounded like remixes of each other. Just an observation. Not that they were bad or anything.
October 23rd, 2008 at 4:56 pm
Kanye’s consistency will be the ultimate deciding factor. He can easily make 4 more platinum albums….Homie is global and none of those others producers rapped which is where kanye has the advantage and can subsequently cattle pult him into the greatest of all time if he is not already
