KING Recreates Ice-T’s Power Album Cover
You’re gonna hear a real ill paragraph soon/I took the cover right home to the bathroom…
I’m sure that anybody of the male species who falls within my age group, give or take 5 years or so, fondly remembers the piece of timeless pop art that is the cover of Ice-T’s 1988 album Power. If my memory serves me, I first came across it during one of my then weekly raids of my older cousin’s extensive cassette collection.
And there stood Ice’s then wife Darlene Ortiz in all her bikini clad, shottie toting, chest out resplendence. Sure, it may look tame by today’s standards, but this was a huge deal in the days before the internet, back when Kimberly Jones was just a glimmer in her daddy’s eye.
Anyway, the good folks at King Magazine took some initiative and tracked Ms. Ortiz down for a recreation of the infamous cover in honor of the album’s 20th anniversary. As you can see above, she’s aged pretty nicely and damn if she doesn’t still wear the shit out of that one-piece. She spoke with them about how the cover came about, her ex’s new arm candy and how she felt when LL involved her in his beef with Ice.
It ended up looking like a Darlene album cover featuring Ice-T and Evil E. LL Cool J was a fan, using the cover as ammo while dissing Ice on “To Da Break of Dawn.” Did you feel disrespected?
I wasn’t bothered by it. I don’t think my ex was too bothered by it either, but you know what happens when you get that push from other people. I didn’t ever see him tripping off of it. Then, the next thing you know, we were at Flavor Flav’s birthday party and it’s going down.
