^I don’t think that was or is stupid at all, great business move every time, 70 mill is an accomplishment, no doubt. But for me it tarnishes his legacy when legendary status is an issue; regardless of units sold to said TRL demographic.

@ Ty– I’m not saying any of that for shock value–you know me better than that. I’m a huge fan of eminem’s pre-encore work. I don’t think he lost talent, I just think he stopped caring, and for someone whose whole gimmick was “i’m a white boy that loves rap and has been rapping for 10 years before I got a break” to basically throw in the towel creatively after 4 years? Pfff… Summer 2003 he was destroying Benzino/Murder Inc lyrically and a year later he’s putting out trash like “Big Weenie”? Dude just threw in the towel.

I hope em’s comeback album (yes, i’ve been paying attention–i’m a fan) is incredible, but the original topic was “If em retired TODAY would he be considered a legend?”.

@ McFly– I dunno, man. There’s just something about Eminem and Legend that don’t go together for me. Jay was smart. Jay came right back after the disappointment (a fair word) of Kingdom Come with American Gangster, that was an all around great album, practically dry-humping the line between “very good” and “classic”. Eminem dropped “Encore” and then a greatest hits, and then disappeared. I know Proof’s passing has something to do with that, but when push came to shove in terms of his CAREER, Em just shrugged and accepted “Fell Off Status” (fueled by the disappointment that was “Encore”) and became a fuckin’ hermit. To me, that doesn’t = legendary.

Em and Jay are different dudes because Jay is concerned about his style and image, he’s 40 and jumped on the “skull and crossbones steez” bandwagon when you know that shit isn’t for anyone over 30. Em has become Prince of the du-rag (All respect to the King of the du-rag, Memph Bleek) and hasn’t followed any trends at all. His image is the last thing on his mind.
