I haven’t even listened to this yet, but all I know is that last Hamilton mixtape, which had like 5 of his boys on it, was better than the last Curtis album by about 10 times.

r^Yes-sign. Vol.3 has more wack songs than AG, & AG best songs are as good as Vol.3 best songs. But Vol.3 is good, i’m not saying it’s bad, cause it’s not, but it’s not as good as Vol.3. Vol.3 had some really wack ass beats, “snoopy track” “things that you do” “pop 4 rock” while AG had really no wack ass beats, & lyrically AG > Vol.3

Pop 4 Roc and S.Carter were weak songs, granted. But Snoopy track was the shit. I’d argue that There’s Been a Murder, Watch Me, So Ghetto, and Come and Get me are better than whatever you think the dopest song on AG is. Not to mention “Jigga That Nigga”, nothing on AG is fucking with that joint. Vol.3 was the solidifier of Jay being the elite MC in the game.

@ McFly– I dunno, man. There’s just something about Eminem and Legend that don’t go together for me. Jay was smart. Jay came right back after the disappointment (a fair word) of Kingdom Come with American Gangster, that was an all around great album, practically dry-humping the line between “very good” and “classic”. Eminem dropped “Encore” and then a greatest hits, and then disappeared. I know Proof’s passing has something to do with that, but when push came to shove in terms of his CAREER, Em just shrugged and accepted “Fell Off Status” (fueled by the disappointment that was “Encore”) and became a fuckin’ hermit. To me, that doesn’t = legendary.

“Encore”’s bad songs were more memorable than it’s good songs, and that’s not good.

Okay, that being said, there are some quality songs on “Encore”, but ass like that, my first single, puke, some of the skits, rain man, big weenie, evil deeds… Those were bad, dude. The d-12 song was bad, but what d-12 songs aren’t? I really liked toy soldiers, mockingbird, mosh, encore, and spend some time, but it was still a disappointing venture.

Bottom line: If you’re Marshall Bruce Mathers III, you don’t leave your solo career with “Encore” as it’s final display of talent/effort. Jay-Z gets the pass because he redeemed himself with “American Gangster”.

You go out on top, or if not on top, at least good enough to let people know that you didn’t tarnish your legacy.

I don’t think he lost talent, I just think he stopped caring, and for someone whose whole gimmick was “i’m a white boy that loves rap and has been rapping for 10 years before I got a break” to basically throw in the towel creatively after 4 years? Pfff… Summer 2003 he was destroying Benzino/Murder Inc lyrically and a year later he’s putting out trash like “Big Weenie”? Dude just threw in the towel.

I hope em’s comeback album (yes, i’ve been paying attention–i’m a fan) is incredible, but the original topic was “If em retired TODAY would he be considered a legend?”.

^I don’t think that was or is stupid at all, great business move every time, 70 mill is an accomplishment, no doubt. But for me it tarnishes his legacy when legendary status is an issue; regardless of units sold to said TRL demographic.
