Eminem’s cosign was huge, probably way moreso than Dre’s at that time. Late 2002 when 50′s GRODT buzz kicked into overdrive, Em had just sold 8m with “The Eminem Show” and 8 Mile made $100m at the box office. He coulda made people do the fuckin’ hokey pokey in times square if he wanted to.
As for Bleek, I don’t know what you mean, but my point was that it didn’t fuck with Jay’s audience. Okay, maybe audience is out the window, but Eminem had a niche, he had a very successful formula, and adding 50 to the mix corrupted it, hence the “weed plate” that was “Encore”.
“Encore”‘s bad songs were more memorable than it’s good songs, and that’s not good.

If Em doesn’t endorse 50, he goes platinum, maybe double, but doesn’t do shit else and fades quickly. Remember: 2003, people still sold albums. But if Em-Dre aren’t interested, 50 either signs randomly with a one-off label, or joins an established crew. Back in ’02 when he signed his deal (probably, what, mid-year let’s say?) the crews running mainstream hip-hop were:
Cash Money- No way. 50 doesn’t fit at all, affected drawl or otherwise.
Roc-A-Fella- Wouldn’t happen. No room. The Dips kept The Roc afloat that year with Cam getting 2 radio hits, and they already had State Property keeping them hot in the “skreets” while Jay nursed his “ether” wounds.
Bad Boy- 50 was too gangster for them then. “I Need A Girl” ruled, btw.
Murder Inc- Um…yeah. No.
So where does 50 go? He doesn’t fit with a crew, and no random-ass label (sony, columbia, rca, etc etc) is gonna promote him. Em and Dre and Interscope’s beef-fueled gimmicky promo staff knew they could market him and have Dre’s beats carry his minimally talented self.

@ X– I wouldn’t call Kanye a legend at all. A visionary, a trend-setter, unique, yes. Legen…wait for it…dary? No. My favorite musical artist of any genre at this point in time, yes. Legend? No.
And they’re right, the fourth album is a tough one. I’m admittedly nervous about this upcoming Kanye album, but hey, dude has 2 bonafide classics and one outstanding album–he’s 3 for 3, dangit!–so the bar has been set high enough that if this one isn’t life-changing for me (and again, i’m the president of the NR Kanye Stanye Societye), I won’t be shattered–I’ll understand.

It could go either way I think. They say town hall settings are McCain’s strong point, but they also said that about foreign policy and Obama got the W last time. If nothing else, I expect more fire from both. McCain because he’s gotta find a way to spin the economy and his participation in his downfall, and Obama cause he’s probably pissed at all that ether they sprayed at him yesterday.
If the questions are mostly based around the economy, I think Obama wins. If the topics vary, McCain has a shot.

I haven’t even listened to this yet, but all I know is that last Hamilton mixtape, which had like 5 of his boys on it, was better than the last Curtis album by about 10 times.

Pop 4 Roc and S.Carter were weak songs, granted. But Snoopy track was the shit. I’d argue that There’s Been a Murder, Watch Me, So Ghetto, and Come and Get me are better than whatever you think the dopest song on AG is. Not to mention “Jigga That Nigga”, nothing on AG is fucking with that joint. Vol.3 was the solidifier of Jay being the elite MC in the game.

@ McFly– I dunno, man. There’s just something about Eminem and Legend that don’t go together for me. Jay was smart. Jay came right back after the disappointment (a fair word) of Kingdom Come with American Gangster, that was an all around great album, practically dry-humping the line between “very good” and “classic”. Eminem dropped “Encore” and then a greatest hits, and then disappeared. I know Proof’s passing has something to do with that, but when push came to shove in terms of his CAREER, Em just shrugged and accepted “Fell Off Status” (fueled by the disappointment that was “Encore”) and became a fuckin’ hermit. To me, that doesn’t = legendary.

Okay, that being said, there are some quality songs on “Encore”, but ass like that, my first single, puke, some of the skits, rain man, big weenie, evil deeds… Those were bad, dude. The d-12 song was bad, but what d-12 songs aren’t? I really liked toy soldiers, mockingbird, mosh, encore, and spend some time, but it was still a disappointing venture.
Bottom line: If you’re Marshall Bruce Mathers III, you don’t leave your solo career with “Encore” as it’s final display of talent/effort. Jay-Z gets the pass because he redeemed himself with “American Gangster”.
You go out on top, or if not on top, at least good enough to let people know that you didn’t tarnish your legacy.
