At some point, we’ve got to stop comparing ‘98 music to ‘08 music. It’s very rare that music stands the test of time. If it does, it’s either been considered a classic - or is very personal to the listener. Either way, they ain’t backing off of it.

Besides, how often do you REALLY listen to Illmatic? Classic material is not always what’s up.
