Rolling Stone’s Inside The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill: An Oral History

Just passing this link along.
The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill was released 10 years ago this week and went on to sell more than 8 million copies, win five Grammys and earn a four-star review in Rolling Stone. Mary J. Blige hailed it as “one of the most incredible albums ever made” and the record influenced a generation of soul and hip-hop artists.
“Music is about to change,” Hill told Rolling Stone’s Touré for his 1999 cover story. “I think now people feel a little more comfortable playing with the parameters. Writing more intensely.”
Miseducation’s liner notes mostly credit Hill with producing, writing and arranging the entire album. It was, in fact, a huge group effort (as underlined by a lawsuit settled out of court in 2001 for a reported $5 million). To celebrate the album, Rolling Stone spoke with many of those responsible for making it: a then-little known pianist named John Legend, D’Angelo, engineer Commissioner Gordon, backup singers, New-Ark producers, Hill’s longtime companion Rohan Marley, her Fugee bandmate Pras Michel.

It was, AG is way more lyrical than BA, c’mon on “lucifer” he said
The more you talk, the more you urking us, the more you gonna need memorial sevices
^That soung like some shit prodigy would say on “infamy”,
fallen, pray, american dreaming, american gangster, ignorant shit (something before BA) say hello > BA

“Put that knife in ya, take a little bit of life from ya
Am I frightenin ya? Shall I continue?
I put the gun to ya, I let it sing you a song
I let it hum to ya, the other one sing along
Now it’s a duet, and you wet, when you check out
the technique from the 2 tecs and I don’t need two lips
To blow this like a trumpet you dumb shit
This is a un-usual musical I conductin
You lookin at the black Warren Buffett so all critics can duck sic
I don’t care if you C. Delores Tuck-it
Or you Bill O’Reilly, you only rylin me up
For three years, they had me peein out of a cup
Now they bout to free me up, whatchu think I’m gon’ be, what?
Rehabilitated, man I still feel hatred
I’m young black and rich so they wanna strip me naked, but”
^This is light and its better then any one verse on AG….

^Threat is one of the better songs on that album, along with alure, public service announcement, & change clothes, but the last song on AG lyrically blows that out the water
Then the roc broke up had people losing hope, can’t lie they had muhammad hovi on the ropes, now i’m back in the Goat mode, back in the go go’s, throwing the diamond up repping the logo
AG will be over looked, but it’s one of his best albums, way better than BA

August 26th, 2008 at 5:26 pm
There’s never been a nigga this good for this long
This hood, or this pop, this hot, or this strong
With so many different flows there’s one for this song
The next one I switch up, this one will get bit up
These fucks, too lazy to make up shit, they crazy
They don’t, paint pictures, they just, trace me
You know what? Soon they forget where they plucked
they whole style from, they try to reverse the outcome
I’m like – TOUGH!
I’m not a biter I’m a writer for myself and others
I say a B.I.G. verse, I’m only biggin up my brother
Biggin up my borough, I’m big enough to do it
I’m that thorough, plus I know my own flow is foolish
So them rings and things you sing about, bring ‘em out
It’s hard to yell when the bar-rell’s in your mouth
I’m in – new sneakers, dual-seaters
Few divas, what more can I tell you?
Let me spell it for you
Double-U I, double-L, I-E
Nobody truer than, H-O-V
And I’m back for more, New York’s ambassador
Prime Minister, back to finish my business up”
^Matter fact name a verse better then this one…..serious Joe, no arch enemy ishh

almost none of you fools even mention what the post entails.
this was a good read. good insight on the lawsuit and a mindframe as to why lauryn/ms hill isn’t active anymore.
having d’angelo comment on the subject was almost more of a shocker,
since they both (lauryn and d) are sailing in similar vessels lately.
thanks for the link.

Nice article… then again, I’m a huge fan of all things Lauryn! I’ve always wished that she would come back, if only for just one more album. Then I think… what if the projuect doesn’t measure up to the Miseducation of Lauryn Hill? With that in mind, I’m completely content with this as her last body of work. I was a masterpiece and a true template for all great R&B of the future (Jazmine Sullivan lol). Most importantly though… it’s Miss Lauryn’s legacy!
