Mos Def x Gil Scott-Heron At Carnegie Hall

Mos Def & Gil Scott-Heron

This right here is so wavy. Hearing about shit like this, and that Dave Chappelle might be following up the first Block Party, makes hip hop so worth it to me. Mos Def hooked up with the god Gil Scott-Heron over at Carnegie and they did their thing:

On Saturday, the world famous Carnegie Hall played host to the Mos Def Big Band with special guest Gil Scott-Heron as part of the JVC Jazz Festial New York. From carnegiehall.org: “Already a wildly successful vocalist, musician, and actor, Mos Def has taken the next logical step with the creation of the Mos Def Band, rolling hip hop, jazz, and soul into one thrilling sound. Special guest Gil Scott-Heron first made his name decades ago with his no-nonsense anthem “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised.” Together, the two artists have created an evening of music and spoken words with material drawn from Miles Davis, Beyoncé, James Brown, and others.”

One of said “others” was Jay Electronica, who Mos gave serious props to with an acepella version of the second verse from “Act 1: Eternal Sunshine (The Pledge)” followed by the orchestra playing a piece of Michel Gondry’s Eternal Sunshine composition.”

If you haven’t heard Act 1, you’re a fucking sucker. It actually made me want to sit down and finally watch Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and it was nothing short of brilliance. Had me tripping balls for days. I know it should be the other way around, but it was cool to see the Jon Brion instrumentals he used being tucked into the movie, because then when I listened to the songs again it all made sense.

Mos Def – Verse 2 from “Act 1: Eternal Sunshine (The Pledge)”

if the best people got on 3 stacks is that he doesn’t drop enuf verses, then all i got to say is, how many fucking balloon dogs does jeff koons have to make? these cats are artists! you can’t force art! and if you do, then some of it is going to be art and some of it is going to be gahbidge. make ur mama proud, take that thing 2 sizes down.

word to copping ATLiens the day it came out

but fuck it 3 stacks’ cameos > most rappers’ careers

he made the walk it out rmx amazing

he took the vulgar and the profane and made it shine

    that’s a true artist

how would cam have rapped over that beat?

i told her walk it out
then i walked on her snout
put my cock in her mouth
run the block by the ounce

give me a break dude is entertaining but he spits that assembly-line flow, like he’ll do the same shit over any beat no matter the beats per minute, dude has one mode and just does it. i can’t hate because it’s entertaining but to put him ahead of mos and 3 stacks are you crazy? foh

stacks b! RIP the gorgeous gangsta, he died too early. but nah let’s be completely honest he was still developing his ill flow, whereas andre and big boi were born ill. 2 cats from the south that went over everybody’s heads till aquemini dropped and the masses embraced them. but make no mistake they were impeccable from day 1. aquemini was good but not the best. ATLiens = crack

actually let me go out on a limb:

ATLiens getting less than 5 mics = the impending downfall of the Sauce

they got so much shit wrong back in the day it was tragic, and the sad thing is, we the fans actually cared, like we waited to see what the fucking Sauce would say

i wonder if there will ever be a voice like that again where you can just crown a album on GP by giving it that type of rating, probably not

    >>Yea, i agree, that’s their Magnum Opus. But their follow-up albums are still greater than alotta the revered albums of now.

One of the characteristics of great art, is that people appreciate the artists work and the artist with time. That’s whats happening with Andre right now. And it’s happening with their albums.

i actually sometimes wonder, if Kanye wasn’t with the ROC/co-signed by Jay-z, etc. and just an independent artist paving his way, would some of his more riskier work be as widely accepted as they are right now, or would his worth be seen with time.

Or maybe the game just changed all together.
